Connie Chung, longtime resident of Middletown, NJ, is a groundbreaking journalist. She was the first Asian American anchor on CBS News. She interviewed many prominent political figures, and she won three Emmy Awards and a Peabody Award.

Even after she left CBS, she still remained active. She continued commenting on current political and social events. In her memoir, she detailed the blatant sexism and racism she dealt with as a journalist. Many times, she was talked down to or treated differently because of her identity as an Asian American Woman. Additionally, in 2018, she wrote an op-ed talking about sexual abuse she dealt with at the hands of her family doctor. She talked about her story in hopes that it would help others with similar experiences.

Clara Barton was a nurse, teacher, and leader. Although not originally from New Jersey, she moved to the area from Massachusetts in 1852 to teach at a private school. When she was in New Jersey, she realized the need for a free school. Thus, Clara Barton opened and ran the first free school in the state. Later, during the Civil War, she spent her time delivering supplies to and caring for injured Union soldiers. She eventually went on to found the American Red Cross and led as its president for 16 years. She was also an active leader and supporter of the Women’s Suffrage Movement.

Even with snow on the ground, stepping outside for ten minutes can reset your mood. A short walk moves your body, gives your eyes a break from screens, and lets fresh air and light interrupt the loop of worry.

Stand still for a moment, close your eyes, and take three deep breaths. Feel the sun on your face, even if it’s weak, let that warmth be a small, steady anchor in a day that feels heavy.

Simple ways to bring sunlight and nature into your day:
Ten‑minute walk — Move at an easy pace; notice the sky, the air, the sounds.

Phone a friend — Call someone while you walk if they can’t join you in person.

Sun pause — Stop, close your eyes, breathe deeply, and feel the light on your skin.

Grounding breaths — Inhale for four, hold for one, exhale for six; repeat three times.

Bring nature inside — Open a window, set a plant by your desk, or place a sunny photo where you’ll see it.

Small, consistent moments add up. One short walk a day or a single mindful pause in the sun can shift your energy and give you a little more space to breathe.

Spring is coming! Hold onto that promise of warmth, growth, and new beginnings. Let yourself feel a little excited for the light and the small, hopeful things on the horizon.

We are so grateful for Shelise’s thoughtful leadership on the Safe+Sound staff. She is truly an example of a strong woman leader. Read her reflection below, and click here to keep empowering future women leaders: https://bit.ly/3MSXLQF

“As a leader, I have grown in my role by learning to balance the many responsibilities of the role while ensuring that I remain visible and supportive and take care of myself. I continuously work to manage time effectively without losing sight of the human side of leadership and myself.

I’ve learned that leadership requires continuous growth, reflection, and humility. I’ve discovered that I am most effective when I listen first, remain flexible, and lead with empathy and compassion.

My advice to future leaders is to lead with integrity, remain authentic, and never stop learning. Build strong relationships, seek feedback, and remember that leadership is about impact—not position.”
