🖤 Black History Month 🚑✨

Did you know that America’s first advanced paramedics were Black men?

In the late 1960s, the Freedom House Ambulance Service in Pittsburgh’s Hill District transformed emergency care. At a time when ambulances often offered little more than transportation, these paramedics were trained to deliver life-saving medical care before patients ever reached the hospital.

They built the foundation of what we now know as modern EMS.

Despite their success, their contributions were overlooked for decades due to systemic racism—and many were pushed out when the program was absorbed into a city-run system.

Black History Month is about more than well-known figures.
It’s about honoring innovators whose impact changed lives, communities, and entire industries.

If you’re in the middle of a snowstorm, your safety comes first. Stay calm, stay warm, and stay informed.

🏠 If you’re at home:
• Stay indoors and limit unnecessary movement
• Avoid overexertion while shoveling — heart strain is a real risk
• Keep flashlights on hand in case of power outages
• Check in on neighbors, especially elders or anyone living alone

🚗 If you’re stranded in a car:
• Stay in your vehicle if it’s safe
• Run the engine periodically for warmth (with ventilation)
• Use hazard lights and stay visible

You’re in luck! The first classes of 2025 will be HYBRID CLASSES!

Hybrid classes have an educational online component and a 2.5-hour in-person skills session to practice skills learned and become comfortable and competent in emergency scenarios. Sign up for the course today, receive your link to the online modules tomorrow from Salesforce, and plan to spend 2-3 hours going through the online presentation and activities. Once modules are completed, you will receive another email from Salesforce saying that the online portion is completed and you are ready for the in-person skills session. Show this email to your instructor when you arrive to class and we’re good to go!

The first class of 2025 will take place on Saturday, January 18th from 12:30pm - 3:00pm at The Dojo @ Somernova. The address is 15 Properzi Way, Somerville, MA. The cost of class is $90.

The second class of 2025 will take place on Saturday, February 1st from 12:30pm-3:00pm also at The Dojo @ Somernova. The address is 15 Properzi Way, Somerville, MA. The cost of class is $90.

I'm so happy to announce a new collaboration with . They are allowing us to use their beautiful space to conduct our classes for the foreseeable future. Everyone has been so kind and welcoming. I am excited for this new partnership. If you haven't had time to check out The Dojo @ Somernova, this is your reminder. They have big open spaces for events, cozy spaces for Teen nights, plenty of board games, and tons of video games & media equipment. We are doing our last 2 community classes of the year at The Dojo. Adult & Pediatric First Aid/CPR/AED class on Tuesday, December 3rd and Friday, December 13th both at 10am-2:30pm. The address is 15 Properzi Way, Somerville. The cost of the class is $100. There is no previous CPR training experience required and classes top out at 6 people.
