Army veteran Stephen Linn, a nationally certified Critical Care Registered Nurse at Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital Somerset, was recently honored by “Military Makeover with Montel” – a television series that transforms the homes and lives of military families – during the season 44 kickoff at The Pavilion at Red Mill Museum Village in Clinton. Stephen served in Afghanistan and received two Valorous Unit Awards; the Army Commendation Medal, and was named a Distinguished Member of the 30th Infantry Regiment.

From Sept. 23–30, volunteers will help transform the Linn family’s home with painting, decorating, gardening, and more. The show will air at 7:30 a.m. on Friday, Nov. 7, on Lifetime TV, or watch online at https://militarymakeover.tv.

He has also led the Grammy-winning United Nation Orchestra and the Jon Faddis Jazz Orchestra of New York. Currently, he serves as a full-time faculty member at the Conservatory of Music, Purchase College-SUNY, and holds the first-ever honorary doctorate in Jazz from Manhattan School of Music.

September is National Recovery Month. We join our RWJBarnabas Health Institute for Prevention & Recovery team in recognizing all who have been impacted by substance use disorder and offering help for anyone on their recovery journey and their loved ones who support them.

This year we’re encouraging everyone to be a hero and carry naloxone. This lifesaving, opioid overdose-reversal medication, provides individuals the opportunity to receive emergency care and recovery support. In this way, naloxone helps open a window to recovery and provides hope to individuals, their families, and communities.

When Albert Intili experienced the most excruciating pain of his life, a CT scan in RWJUH Somerset’s Emergency Department showed that a perforated colon was leaking bowel contents into his abdominal cavity, causing life-threatening sepsis. He had one request for surgeon Sarah Bryczkowski, MD: he desperately wanted to be at his daughter’s wedding two weeks later.

Knowing that open surgery would likely double his recovery time, Dr. Bryczkowski performed minimally invasive robotic surgery with the da Vinci Surgical System. Albert then focused on regaining his strength through physical therapy.

“The inpatient team even showed me how I could dance with Savannah by holding elbows and swaying,” he recalls. “Everyone played a role in helping me get to that wedding.”

When the big day came, Albert went down the aisle in a wheelchair. But that didn’t stop him from embracing his role in the father-daughter dance.

“I forgot the holding elbows advice – all I knew was that I was dancing with my daughter on her wedding day, and it was beautiful,” he says. “There wasn’t a dry eye in the place. Dr. Sarah and the team made that possible.”
