This weekend, RWJUH Somerset’s Community Health team spread some holiday cheer by donating toys to LifeCamp in Pottersville. The gifts were shared during LifeCamp’s holiday party, where campers celebrated and opened presents together. 🎁

Each summer, LifeCamp hosts a six-week day camp serving 550 youth from the Newark area. Through a longstanding partnership with the Far Hills Race Meeting Association and RWJUH Somerset’s Community Health department, we also provide health education programs for campers throughout the summer, focusing on dental hygiene, hydration and first aid.

Yesterday evening, RWJUH Somerset’s Steeplechase Cancer Center hosted a heartwarming holiday celebration for the children and grandchildren of our cancer patients.

A huge thank you to the Somerset County Prosecutor’s Office Detectives/Policemen Benevolent Association Local 307 for sponsoring this special event — a tradition they’ve proudly continued for 13 years!

Santa made a memorable entrance on a SWAT truck, greeted each family, took photos, and delivered presents to the children of the 10 families who joined us.

Guests enjoyed a warm dinner and festive coloring activities while awaiting Santa’s big arrival.

Thank you to everyone who helped make this magical evening possible!

Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital (RWJUH) Somerset is proud to be one of only two hospitals in New Jersey offering specialized inpatient care for eating disorder treatment, a vital part of RWJBarnabas Health’s Behavioral Health Services in partnership with Rutgers University Behavioral Health Care.

In this episode, Dr. Douglas Ashinsky of RWJBarnabas Health Medical Group speaks with Amanda Bitterman, Lead Therapist, and Christine DeSouza, Nutrition Coordinator, for the Eating Disorders Program at RWJUH Somerset. Together, they explore the risk factors, common signs and symptoms, and ways to support someone who may be struggling. Congratulations to our Maternity team on being recognized by U.S. News & World Report today as one of the 2025-2026 Best Hospitals for Maternity Care — a prestigious honor awarded to hospitals providing exceptional care for uncomplicated pregnancies.

Best Hospitals for Maternity Care is an annual evaluation designed to help expectant parents make confident, informed decisions alongside their prenatal care teams. Earning a spot on this list represents the highest recognition a maternity hospital can receive from U.S. News & World Report.

Our services for expectant mothers, newborns and their families include a Level II Intermediate Care Nursery staffed 24/7 by a board-certified neonatologist and specially trained nurses; a board-certified obstetrician/gynecologist available 24/7; 24/7 anesthesiology coverage dedicated to obstetrics; counseling with Maternal-Fetal Medicine staff and a perinatologist; a comprehensive Diabetes Center offering pregnancy and post-partum counseling; a Family Practice Center for prenatal and post-partum care; childbirth education classes and a virtual breastfeeding support group.

The awards. Which recognize young professionals who are emerging leaders, were presented at the Partnership’s annual meeting at the Palace at Somerset Park. Clane, a certified emergency nurse who joined the hospital in 2016, was promoted to assistant nursing director in 2020 and was named director of our Rapid Decision Unit in January. Dr. Shapiro, a graduate of the University of Maryland Medical School who completed a fellowship at New York University, joined our medical staff in 2023. She provides Somerset County women convenient access to specialized urogynecologic care using advanced surgical techniques, including robot-assisted surgery, that is unique in a community hospital setting. She is passionate about educating women about their health and has volunteered her time to speak on women’s health topics at a variety of education programs in our community.

We are excited to share that Somerset County entrepreneur Josh Kalafer has been appointed Chairman of the Board of Trustees for Somerset Health Care Foundation, the fundraising arm of RWJUH Somerset.

Josh is the owner of Land Rover Princeton, co-owner of Clinton Honda and co-owner/co-chairman of the Somerset Patriots, the Double AA affiliate of the New York Yankees. He has served as chair of the Somerset Health Care Foundation Golf Outing since 2013, which has raised over $2 million to support programs and services at RWJUH Somerset. He joined the Somerset Health Care Foundation’s Board of Trustees in 2021. In 2023, he was appointed Co-Vice Chair of the Board.

The Kalafer family’s years of service and dedication to RWJUH Somerset began with Josh’s father, Steve Kalafer (1949-2021), serving as Chairman Emeritus of Somerset Health Care Foundation’s Board of Trustees and spearheading several successful fundraising campaigns over the past two decades. The Kalafer family has donated more than $3.5 million to RWJUH Somerset. In recognition of their generosity, RWJUH Somerset dedicated its new Rapid Decision Unit in honor of the Kalafer family earlier this year.

As we congratulate Josh on his new role, we also extend our appreciation to outgoing Foundation Board Chairman Paul Hubert, who served as chairman since 2017.
