A message from Mother Maureen:

Dear Friends,
Please join us on Saturday, November 9 from 9am-4pm for our very last Christmas Bazaar!

For years, we have been humbled by the outpouring of community support at our annual Bazaar. It is truly a joyous time- filled with amazing prizes and deals. The Bazaar is a wonderful way to get an early start on Christmas shopping while supporting our residents here at Jeanne Jugan.

There is no doubt that people in the community are as saddened as we are to know that The Little Sisters will be withdrawing from Somerville. However, we count on your continued support of our mission especially during this difficult time of transition. We hope that you will join us one last time to celebrate the beautiful memories and community that we have shared here in Somerville.

Don’t pass on your chance to win cash prizes, an Apple Watch, a bike, drones, a Roomba i7 Robot, and much more! Our gift baskets are catered to all ages and make shopping a breeze.

Thank you for your generosity towards our home. We hope to see you on the 9th!
God bless you,

Sr. Maureen, lsp

Today we remember our foundress, Saint Jeanne Jugan (October 25, 1792- August 29, 1879). On August 30 we observe the feast day of St. Jeanne Jugan.

As the number of older people grows, the message of our foundress is most relevant for our day. From the start, Jeanne Jugan did not want her Congregation to limit itself to the West of France, but rather to become a real network of family homes where each person would be cared for as family and accompanied with dignity until God called them to Himself. Today, the Little Sisters of the Poor carry out this vision on six continents. Learn more about St. Jeanne Jugan below:

Twelve years ago, when I first visited the Little Sisters of the Poor (LSP) retirement home in Pittsburgh, I was overcome with peace and calm.

We want to wish our Advisory Board Chairman, Somerville Mayor Emeritus Gene Brune a VERY happy 90th birthday today! Although we still can't believe he is 90! Gene has been so wonderful to the Little Sisters of the Poor in Somerville for more than four decades, and we are so blessed to call him a friend.

On Wednesday, we surprised Gene with a birthday party here at the home, and the Pope even stopped by to give him a special certificate for all of his good work on behalf of the Little Sisters of the Poor and the City of Somerville. Photo below with Gene, The Sisters, and The Holy Father! 😉

HAPPY BIRTHDAY, GENE!!

Even though Democrats like to say religious liberty is a cherished issue among the right, they’re consistently proving they too, have a fascination, albeit a morbid one, with the First Amendment.

This Saturday is our 7th annual fundraising dinner, and it is looking like it will be our best yet! This is thanks to the wonderful support of our sponsors and benefactors who give so generously.

We would like to thank in particular our Archangel Michael Sponsors ($3,000 Level) for their incredible kindness: East Cambridge Savings Bank & Saint Cecilia Parish! The Little Sisters of the Poor are so blessed to have your support and friendship!

Yesterday, a few of the Sisters had the opportunity to go to the newly renovated Cathedral of the Holy Cross in Boston to see the relic of St. John Vianney that is making its rounds in the Archdiocese. It was a very spiritual and reflective experience for the Sisters. Thanks to Sr. Mary John for snapping this beautiful photo of two of the Sisters praying in front of the relic!

Many Little Sisters remember with great fondness their time in Paris, attending services at Notre Dame and even begging there. Today we mourn the tremendous loss of history, but remember our faith that God is in charge of everything.

On Wednesday, March 5, we had a wonderful and fun-filled Mardi Gras celebration for our Residents here at the home. Staff and Residents created "floats" that represented famous musicals, and dressed up for the parts. It was such a fun day---so much fun, in fact, that we didn't get many good pictures!! But here are just a few for those of you who were asking for them!!
