This business of clock repair has to be the most interesting, and most rewarding business I have ever been in. And, during my younger years I experienced a lot of career changes. When it comes to clock repair there is no typical customer. They range from those with a battery operated clock that has been with them for 20 or 30 years, to those with family heirlooms that have been in the family since the late 1800’s. Many in between that have 40 or 50 year old clocks that they received as a wedding gift. Some retirement presentation clocks. Many with engraved plaques.

The common denominator is they all have sentimental, or special meaning to them. In most cases they just want them to work again. Like the striking clock they remember as a kid that granddad had to wind up every week. The lady from Germany who, with her husband, brought their precious box clock with them when the immigrated. One recent case was a gentleman whose wife had passed away. Before her death she had taken her wall clock to a shop for repair. She didn’t live long enough for the shop to do the job. The gentleman retrieved the clock from that shop and brought it to me. Repairs were made, and the clock returned to him in working condition, hopefully fulfilling his wife’s wishes.

Many stories fill my mind and memories. Too many to categorize. Too many to single out. All very special. Every clock has a story. And I believe I have heard most of them. 🕰️

The town of Sonoma used to have a legitimate newspaper published twice a week. When I moved here 27 years ago it was still a legitimate source of local news that I relied upon. This clock used to hang in the office of the original Sonoma Index Tribune back in the very early 1900's. It was there until the Lynch family sold the business to an entrepreneur, Darius Anderson. I will be working on several clocks from that period that belong to the Lynch family, namely Jim and Sharon. This was the first. Early 1900's Sessions Regulator. My honor.

For what it's worth, the current newspaper is a mere shadow of the Santa Rosa based Press Democrat, part of the parent company.

This is what you do with the old desk clocks with worn out windup movements. The cases were refinished and quartz movements installed. They make great gifts.

Your tip for the day. Never use furniture polish on your wooden clock case. It dries out the wood. Use a beeswax and orange oil polish to keep the wood conditioned and shiny. My choice is Howard Feed-N-Wax. You can’t go wrong with it. Available at most hardware stores.

My latest project during the slow time. 1917 Waterbury with Westminster chime. Original mahogany finish was sun bleached so I stripped it and left it natural. Chime rods were broken during the Napa earthquake in 2013 along with a couple small pieces of wood. Replaced the chime rods and serviced the movement. Good as new now.

One of my customers sent me this photo to show me his clock. I had just finished servicing it, and he picked it up that day.

Merry Christmas to all my friends (customers)! Have a wonderful Holiday Season.

Okay, it's been a while since I posted anything here, and I'll bet you all thought I was dead. 😉The truth is my recovery has been slower than I had hoped, but I am still working on clocks, and have been since about two weeks into my rehab. I had two customer's clocks in the shop when I had my surgery. I needed to finish them up as soon as possible, so as soon as I was able to get around with a cane I made my way over to the shop. One very large wall clock and three cuckoo clocks later I was back in business.

I thank you all for your patience and support. While I don't have any recent photos to post, please be assured there have been many clocks put back in service in the last few months. During recent weeks there has been a new addition to the crew in the form of rescue dog Rue. She is very shy, and might not be out to greet customers for a while, but know we are working on building her confidence in meeting new people. She is currently getting used to the resident cat, Jack.

Please know that I am still here to help you with your clock repair questions and needs. Feel free to reach out for help, and I will try my best to help you.

One last wish for all, especially our beloved Country.

I don’t like working on anniversary clocks, otherwise known as 400 day clocks. This one was gifted to me by a customer who said they were never able to get it to work. After replacing the badly twisted suspension spring, and scraping out all the old dried up oil, setting it up and putting it in beat, it runs perfectly. Ready for whoever wants to buy it.

Before and after photos of a black marble French clock I just finished. The black finish was re-done, with the gold filagree redone. The time only movement was cleaned and lubricated. Pretty nice little clock from the late 1800’s.

Yesterday Sonoma Clock Repair said goodbye to our partner, greeter, confidant, and dearest friend. Fiona took her last breath after a valiant fight with congestive heart failure. She passed with me scratching her head and telling her what a good girl she was. At 16 years old she had had a full and loving life. She especially relished greeting new people as they came to our shop. She was my constant companion in the last year and a half with the passing of her partner Iggy.

She was a constant in the shop and will be dearly missed. To all the folks that got to meet her during their visit, she was more important to them than seeing me. She will remain in our hearts forever, and her ashes will have a special place in our shop.

Just finished servicing this beautiful example of an 1891 Gustav Becker box clock. The movement was ultrasonically cleaned and lubricated. There were two things wrong with it, the reason it wouldn’t run being a bent suspension spring which was replaced. The second thing WRONG was it was drenched in WD40. Folks, let me be very clear. WD40 is a terrible lubricant. It is great for displacing moisture and preventing rust. You can’t fix a clock by spraying it with WD40. I charge extra for cleaning a clock with dripping WD40 because it ruins my cleaning solution. For the record.
