This business of clock repair has to be the most interesting, and most rewarding business I have ever been in. And, during my younger years I experienced a lot of career changes. When it comes to clock repair there is no typical customer. They range from those with a battery operated clock that has been with them for 20 or 30 years, to those with family heirlooms that have been in the family since the late 1800’s. Many in between that have 40 or 50 year old clocks that they received as a wedding gift. Some retirement presentation clocks. Many with engraved plaques.
The common denominator is they all have sentimental, or special meaning to them. In most cases they just want them to work again. Like the striking clock they remember as a kid that granddad had to wind up every week. The lady from Germany who, with her husband, brought their precious box clock with them when the immigrated. One recent case was a gentleman whose wife had passed away. Before her death she had taken her wall clock to a shop for repair. She didn’t live long enough for the shop to do the job. The gentleman retrieved the clock from that shop and brought it to me. Repairs were made, and the clock returned to him in working condition, hopefully fulfilling his wife’s wishes.
Many stories fill my mind and memories. Too many to categorize. Too many to single out. All very special. Every clock has a story. And I believe I have heard most of them. 🕰️
