For nearly seven years, Martha Sanchez has been a steady, compassionate presence at Sonoma Valley Community Health Center — and her journey is one that beautifully reflects what growth, perseverance, and community truly look like.
Martha first joined SVCHC many years ago as a receptionist, greeting patients and families who would later become a meaningful part of her nursing career. After leaving to pursue nursing, she returned to the Health Center as a Registered Nurse, now caring for many of the same patients she once welcomed at the front desk. Seeing their children grow into adults — and even becoming coworkers — brings her immense joy. Those long-standing relationships are a reminder of the deep roots she has planted in this community.
When asked about accomplishments, Martha speaks with humility and pride: her path wasn’t linear, but it was purposeful. She hopes her story reminds others that careers don’t have to follow a perfect timeline to be meaningful.
Of course, Martha also brings plenty of humor and heart. She admits she “doesn’t really know how to cook” — she simply assembles ingredients in a way that looks like she does. And when she’s not caring for patients, she’s happily embracing life taking care of her playful dogs.
If she could choose a fun superpower to help her at work, Martha says she’d love to sing like Adele — so she could lift a patient’s or coworker’s spirits with a single, beautiful note.
When reflecting on what she’d tell her younger self, her message is powerful:
“It’s okay that you didn’t go to college right out of high school or have your career planned out. It will come at the perfect time. Don’t let fear get in the way of what you want. Time will pass either way — so take the steps toward your goals, no matter how long it takes.”
Martha’s journey is a testament to resilience, heart, and the belief that growth happens exactly when it’s meant to. We are grateful for her leadership, her warmth, and the deep care she brings to our patients and our team every single day.
