Dr. Josh Duckworth has seen the effects of brain injury while treating the wounded in Afghanistan and at home, and serving our veterans who still struggle with the long term effects of their injuries. Over the years, he and his colleague Dr. Paul Sargent, a
leading psychiatrist and the founding Director of the OASIS San Diego Residential PTSD program, have researched solutions for the treatment of Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI). What became clear was that thirty years of clinical trials on single agent solutions have failed. The research also showed that a pleotrophic (combined)
formulation was the most promising way to treat the primary and secondary injuries from brain trauma. Furthermore, to effectively treat the long term effects of TBI a whole body, integrated approach was necessary. SHIELD was developed as the first pleotrophic product to address mitigation of injury through maximization of pre-injury function and supply of elements needed to maintain
neuronal function, minimize primary and secondary injury, promote maximal neuronal repair and prevent progression of chronic processes. While SHIELD is a nutraceutical, not regulated by the FDA, all of the components that make up the formulation have been vigorously tested and currently are available on the market. Among children aged 4 to 14, motor vehicle accidents are the number one cause of brain injury. These, added to the growing number of brain injuries that occur in sports, both to pro-athletes and our children, represent a market for brain injury
treatment that is tragically large.
