Christy Felton Maxson and I are speaking at Sierra Bible Church, Sonora this Sunday (9:00 and 10:45). Here's an intro...

I (Derek) am so happy that I’m not the same person who married Christy almost 32 years ago. We were young and well-intentioned but also naive with some bad habits. Even though we’ve been through difficult times, some enduring truths have grown us and we continue to grow. (In fact, if you want to discover where your marriage still has some issues, prepare together to deliver a sermon about marriage!) Paul wrote in Philippians 1:6, “he [Jesus] who began a good work in you will carry it on to completion until the day of Christ Jesus.”

Pastor Nate asked us to come back with another installation of “A Theologian & A Therapist Discuss Marriage.” This week, we unpack the "one another" for couples. I’ll lead us to examine some key New Testament verses that have been given to us as a pointer toward our own spiritual growth and to relationship growth. Christy will bring practical steps that we can take to implement these Biblical concepts and help us to know how get back on track when we inevitably struggle. It’s been said, “marriage is a people growing machine” and we have found that to be true in our own lives. This growth is even better when we can take steps directed in the Bible and put them to good use and avoid some of the common pitfalls that can get us stuck.

Even if you’re not a couple or you’ll be attending solo, this message is still for you! As you’ll discover, it all points back to how Jesus loves and how Jesus serves. So, this won’t just be a message about having a great marriage, it will be a message about having a great relationship with Jesus.

Many people are confused by the difference between secure attachment and co-dependency. While co-dependency is about how much we allow others to impact how we feel about ourselves, secure attachment is about what we need from another person in order to feel close to them.
