How many of you are exhausted?

This time of year is ESPECIALLY exhausting more us moms.

As a mom you’re expected to handle sports, school, groceries, appointments, meals, hold a job, house chores, and now on top of everything else… Christmas duties.

This year EVERYTHING is more expensive, you have family get togethers to plan and prepare for, you have no more time to give, work is putting pressure on you, and the last thing you want to do is think about your health.

You just want to indulge, make the pressure of life disappear one cookie or latte at a time.

But the thing that scares you is the effect your health is having on your life.

You can’t sleep, you avoid the scale, you’re exhausted all the time, your guts are often mad at you, you can’t stand to see pictures of yourself, and most importantly…

You’re scared and embarrassed at the example you’re setting for your kids.

The pressure of your health is one you can’t avoid or drink away despite the chaos of the season.

But I want you to hear me when I say this.

When the pressure of your health is removed, suddenly the rest seems manageable.

Suddenly there isn’t this pressure on everyday activities.

Your brain is more clear, crisp and able to handle incoming and outcoming information easily.

Your body is able to keep up with the tasks you want to be able to do.

You are able to be fully present for the people and tasks you want to be a part of.

Losing weight and living a healthy lifestyle seems like it is all about taking action.

What diet should I do? How often should I exercise? How often should I eat and what?

It seems like it should be 1+1=2

But it isn’t. And that sucks.

You already eat clean, exercise and watch your calories, but are nowhere closer to your desired result

Why is this?

It may be because you’re focusing your efforts in the wrong area.

I think it’s fascinating to watch my brain when I fast.

There are many days when my day is so packed full that I go without eating and don’t even think about it.

But then when I say “I’m going to fast today” my brain suddenly has this massive toddler tantrum.

I then want fries from MacDonalds when I drive past, or a Starbucks, or that bar that’s been hiding in my purse for the last month.

Suddenly there is cravings and desires for foods that I don’t even want on a normal day

I used to get mad at myself, even resentful for the extra cravings. The internal argument sounded like, “We have to wait until a very specific time before any food can be eaten, and that’s final.”

But I noticed that the more I talked and treated myself like this… the more intense these cravings got.

And then one day I decided to get curious. Why am I craving foods I don’t normally eat? What might be going on here?

And then it hit me…

My brain wasn’t being an ass hole. My brain was scared. It was scared I WASN’T going to eat if I really needed to. It was scared it couldn’t have something it thought it needed. My brain was a scared toddler that didn’t understand what was happening and was acting out.

So now when I inevitably want fries or a latte the second a start a fast, I am quick to remind my brain that we can have that stuff if we want. Just because I’m fasting doesn’t mean I CAN’T eat. It means I DON’T WANT to eat, but that I can if I want to.

I remind my brain that I will listen to it’s cues, and I won’t hold it to a specific timeframe if things need to change. I remind my brain over and over again that we can eat whenever we want. But then… I also gently remind my brain that we’ve got this, and that we can “eat in” today. I remind my brain that my body can switch fuel supplies without it being a big deal. I remind my brain that our body is a badass tool, and today we’re going to push the limits a little.

Now when I fast, I refuse to strong arm my brain and body into a fasted state.

Now when I fast, I’m instead nudging my brain with this thought: “let’s just see what we’re capable of today, and maybe tomorrow we’ll have that latte”

ARE YOU HAPPY WITH YOUR HEALTH?

For me personally, I go back and forth between two distinct phases. Triage and Optimize.

At times, I just feel like crap. I can’t find my words, I ache way more than I should, I can’t recover from my exercise, I’m waking up at 3:00am, I can’t stop eating chips or having that bite of cookie (and then another bite…). I don’t like where I’m at and something needs to change.

This is the phase where I’ve got to triage. It’s time to dig, get crystal clear, and get the appropriate testing required to give me objective data. Then I need to figure out a loving and focused plan that is built from that deep understanding of my body. Then it’s time to implement that plan.

But at other times I feel great. I’m meeting goals, I’m following my plan 100%, I’m careful to remain conscious with my thinking, and my brain is clear and crisp each and every day. This is the phase where I optimize.

I like where I’m at, and I want to keep this going for years to come. This is when I ask myself what I’m missing. Where can I optimize? Do I need to spent time learning and understanding an area that I’ve previously ignored? Maybe this is seeking to understand my genetics, micronutrient levels or hormones. Maybe I want to include more balance and agility into my exercise plan. Maybe I want to lift heavier weights. Maybe I want to incorporate different types of fasting. What can I do to be better tomorrow than I am right now?

What phase are you in right now? Are you needing to triage or optimize?

Even as a Registered Dietitian I sometimes feel stuck in the triage phase. Just because you know what to do doesn’t mean you know how to make it happen consistently.

The relationship rulebook is an amazing tool that will give you back your peace and lay a foundation of unconditional love and acceptance in the relationships you embark on. You will no longer need the people in your life to act a certain way, because your emotional experience will not depend on it. You have the capacity to create emotions that calm top down inflammation, and silence that fight or flight system on your authority. 🤍

My hope is that you will remember this tool the next time you find yourself trying to control the people and world around you. This tool has changed my entire relationship experience, and I hope that you’ll try it on and let me know how it goes. 🙌🏻
