Our Story
I am a marriage and family therapist that currently sees clients in Scotts Valley, California in my private practice. I am a Santa Cruz native, born and raised. I love the diversity of the area and the colorful people that live here. I love working with families and children and have done so for over twenty years in various capacities. My background includes working with children that are moderately to severely affected by autism. I worked in an Early Intervention Classroom at The Bay School utilizing Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA) with children five and under. I also was fortunate to complete my student teaching at Cabrillo College in the Early Childhood Education Center in the preschool classroom.
After completing my BA at Bethany University in Psychology, I applied for the MS program in Clinical Psychology. I finished out the MS at Simpson University due to the closing of Bethany. For two years I worked at Valencia Elementary as the Kids' Korner Counselor through Pajaro Valley Prevention and Student Assistance. I was able to provide onsite play therapy to many children at the school through this program. I was very blessed to work with many families. Some of the families and children that I have worked with have experienced anxiety, trauma, depression, autism, ADHD, developmental issues, behavioral issues, divorce, bulimia, grief and self esteem issues. I have provided parental counseling, sibling counseling, family unit counseling, co-parenting counseling and individual counseling.
My theories of choice are developmental, cognitive behavioral, expressive art, play therapy, and solution focused therapy. I incorporate Applied Behavior Analysis principles throughout my work with families as well. I believe that it is important for families and children to be given the tools that they need to grow. This is best accomplished through an eclectic, personalized approach that brings out each individual's strengths.
I am a strong advocate for early intervention and have seen huge growth in children that are fortunate enough to receive it. I love working with children under five and am amazed at child development. I seek to be a support and resource for families that are navigating the issues related to developmental delays and learning differences. Empirical evidence has shown that children that receive early intervention have better outcomes than children that do not.
I am also deeply touched by families that have experienced the loss of a child. The loss of a child is excruciatingly painful for all family members. The grief that is experienced is long lasting and is difficult to navigate. Children that lose a sibling can often get lost in the shuffle as parents are dealing with their grief. I desire to help families heal this complicated grief through therapy.
No family is perfect. Each family has unique strengths and weaknesses just as each individual does. When life stresses bring anxiety, depression, anger management issues, suicidality or trigger a mental health event our families are affected. Many times we are unable to find resources and support that we need. We are in need of a non-judgmental relationship to discuss our needs, issues and find support. This is where family therapy can help.
