Sedra Ketcham, NP - Beacon Medical Group Hospital Specialties I knew very early on in my life that I wanted to pursue a career in medicine," says Sedra Ketcham. That was that, and I never looked back." Do you have pets? Yes!

"I was just eight years old when I decided I wanted to be a nurse." Of course, that’s perfectly understandable considering her father was a family physician in private practice and her mother is a registered nurse. "As I grew older, I considered becoming a physician," she adds. "When I wasn’t sure I could balance family life with physician life, my father suggested I consider nursing. As a nurse practitioner specializing in palliative care, Sedra works alongside several other disciplines, including specialists and therapists, in an effort to improve quality of life and decrease suffering for people dealing with life-threatening illnesses or complex chronic diseases. "I chose to practice at Beacon because my husband works here, and I’ve seen first-hand how well Beacon not only takes care of their patients, but also their providers." Sedra’s philosophy of care is simple: treat patients the way you would want to be treated if the tables were turned. "I strive to personally get to know each of my patients and their families so we can work together to achieve their health goals," she says. "I want my patients to know that I will be here for them on the good and not so good days and that we are a team, working together to improve their health and well-being." In her own words…

Who is or was the most influential person/role model in your life? My mom – she taught me how to persevere, to grin and bear it and – most of all – to enjoy the journey. What was your first job growing up? What do you remember most about it? My first official job was cleaning my dad’s office. I would go each week to clean and my mom would inspect my work when I finished. What is your favorite food? Popcorn – you can’t beat a bowl of the buttery, salty goodness! Plus, I never met a flavored popcorn that I didn’t like. In addition to medicine, what are you passionate about? What are your hobbies, interests? I really enjoy digital photography as well as trying new recipes and baking. We have a 130lb one-year-old Newfoundland. What is something most people don’t know about you? I can play the flute.

Mackenzie enjoys connecting with patients on a personal level. I know health care can be overwhelming, so I always try to explain things clearly and meet patients where they're at, she says. Whether that means adjusting a plan to fit their lifestyle or just taking the time to answer their questions, I want them to feel supported.

Colds and flu aren’t the only winter illnesses to watch for. Norovirus often circulates more this time of year, and it spreads easily in shared spaces like schools, care facilities and travel hubs.

The encouraging news? A little knowledge can make a big difference. Learn more from Dr. Judith Philip, family medicine physician at Beacon Medical Group WaNee:

As we settle into winter, most of us are on alert for colds and the flu, but stomach bugs deserve a spot on that list, too. Norovirus has a habit of popping up more frequently this time of year, mostly because we’re all indoors more and sharing spaces more...

A new year brings new opportunities to care for your health. Taking a few small steps now can make a meaningful difference in lowering your cancer risk and feeling your best in 2026.

Here is your New Year Prevention Checklist:
• Schedule your screenings. Mammograms, colonoscopies, cervical cancer screenings and lung screenings help catch cancer early when it is most treatable.
• Visit your primary care provider. Annual checkups help you understand which screenings and health goals are right for you.
• Move a little more. A daily walk, stretching routine or light strength work can boost energy and long-term health.
• Choose nourishing foods. More fruits and vegetables and fewer processed foods support cancer prevention. Beacon’s nutrition counseling team can help you build a plan that works
for your life.

Start your year with confidence. Beacon is here to support your
wellness journey at every step. Learn more or schedule your next visit: https://www.beaconhealthsystem.org/ready-to-serve/?utm_source=meta&utm_medium=socialorganic&utm_campaign=cancercare&utm_content=screening

After retiring from a long healthcare career, Anne struggled to find her place. Book clubs didn't quite fit, and she missed the daily connections that had been such a big part of her identity for so many years.

A friend suggested Beacon Health & Fitness Elkhart, and from her first visit, Anne felt the difference. "From the moment you walk in the door, people are just genuinely glad you're there," she said. She started with water aerobics, added senior strength classes, and eventually tried personal training.

Six months later, she felt stronger, more confident, and was managing her arthritis better than ever.

But what Anne values most isn't just the physical improvements. It's the friendships, the monthly lunches with her water aerobics group, and the sense of belonging she's found. "At our wellness exams, they ask questions about loneliness, and we say, ‘We're OK — we've got Beacon.'" Full story below.
