Sedra Ketcham, NP - Beacon Medical Group Hospital Specialties

Sedra Ketcham, NP - Beacon Medical Group Hospital Specialties I knew very early on in my life that I wanted to pursue a career in medicine," says Sedra Ketcham. That was that, and I never looked back." Do you have pets? Yes!

"I was just eight years old when I decided I wanted to be a nurse." Of course, that’s perfectly understandable considering her father was a family physician in private practice and her mother is a registered nurse. "As I grew older, I considered becoming a physician," she adds. "When I wasn’t sure I could balance family life with physician life, my father suggested I consider nursing. As a nurse practitioner specializing in palliative care, Sedra works alongside several other disciplines, including specialists and therapists, in an effort to improve quality of life and decrease suffering for people dealing with life-threatening illnesses or complex chronic diseases. "I chose to practice at Beacon because my husband works here, and I’ve seen first-hand how well Beacon not only takes care of their patients, but also their providers." Sedra’s philosophy of care is simple: treat patients the way you would want to be treated if the tables were turned. "I strive to personally get to know each of my patients and their families so we can work together to achieve their health goals," she says. "I want my patients to know that I will be here for them on the good and not so good days and that we are a team, working together to improve their health and well-being." In her own words…

Who is or was the most influential person/role model in your life? My mom – she taught me how to persevere, to grin and bear it and – most of all – to enjoy the journey. What was your first job growing up? What do you remember most about it? My first official job was cleaning my dad’s office. I would go each week to clean and my mom would inspect my work when I finished. What is your favorite food? Popcorn – you can’t beat a bowl of the buttery, salty goodness! Plus, I never met a flavored popcorn that I didn’t like. In addition to medicine, what are you passionate about? What are your hobbies, interests? I really enjoy digital photography as well as trying new recipes and baking. We have a 130lb one-year-old Newfoundland. What is something most people don’t know about you? I can play the flute.

Protective gear can help keep young athletes safe. But any fall or collision in sports can cause a concussion, even if they wear a helmet. To keep an eye on your young athletes’ health, know these warning signs. If you suspect a potential concussion, pull the athlete out of play and get them checked out. Even a minor concussion should be taken seriously because reinjuring the brain before a concussion heals can lead to more problems.

Learn how the brain specialists at Beacon diagnose and treat concussions to keep young athletes healthy and ready to return to play safely. https://bit.ly/42sbeUs

Colorectal cancer is the third most common among U.S. men and women, excluding skin cancers, according to the American Cancer Association. Colon cancer often starts in the large intestine as polyps, small clumps of cells. Not all polyps are cancer, but some can become cancerous over time. Finding and removing polyps helps prevent colon cancer. We recommend adults talk to their primary care provider about a colorectal cancer screening starting at age 45. There are several options for screening, and your provider can recommend the best one for you. Learn more about your testing options: https://bit.ly/4rUQsaJ

We're proud to share that Beacon Health System CEO Kreg Gruber has been named a 2025 Crain's Grand Rapids Business Newsmaker of the Year in the Health Care category. It's an honor Kreg is quick to point out belongs to the entire Beacon team.

When recognized for Beacon's acquisition of the former Ascension Southwest Michigan properties, Kreg credited what drives every major decision at Beacon: a locally governed, locally led board of community members. They asked two important questions: Could we do good in these communities, and could we still deliver local leadership and governance?

The answer was yes on both accounts.

In accepting the award, Kreg spoke to why access to local health care matters: "Most of us don't think about our health care until we need it. And when we need it, we need it right now. So having strong organizations in our communities in health care really matters."

Congratulations to Kreg, to all the Crain's Newsmakers honorees, and to every member of the Beacon team whose work made this recognition possible. We value your dedication to our mission of delivering outstanding care, inspiring health and connecting with heart.

Hot flashes, night sweats, brain fog, sleep issues, low libido — these are some of the most common symptoms women face as they transition into perimenopause and menopause.

In our latest Medical Minute, family medicine physician Dr. Zach DuBois from Beacon Medical Group Goshen Center for Family Practice breaks down how hormone replacement therapy (HRT) can help relieve these symptoms:

➡️ How estrogen helps with hot flashes, night sweats, brain fog and low energy
➡️ Why progesterone can be key for sleep
➡️ When testosterone may be added
➡️ The importance of progesterone for anyone with a uterus
➡️ Why almost all postmenopausal women can benefit from topical estrogen for vaginal dryness and recurrent UTIs

Dr. DuBois’ key takeaways? You don’t have to live with disruptive menopause symptoms. Learn your options, focus on foundational health habits, and talk with your doctor about whether HRT could be a safe, effective choice for you.
