In honor of Mental Health Awareness Month, we are spotlighting one of our amazing Licensed Social Workers, KeeKee Coleman! KeeKee has been a valued member of the HPI family since 2018, when she joined the team as a case manager. Thank you for all you do, KeeKee!
What inspired you to pursue your LSW and work in mental health?
"At an early age I experienced a parental loss of my mother and from that time forward lived a life where I witnessed social workers come into my life with efforts to be a support. Through this, I now had firsthand knowledge of the vital role social workers have in the lives of people they serve. Further, mental health is still a taboo subject (it’s getting better) amongst the Black community, I wanted to do my part in helping to change that."
How do you take care of your own mental health?
"My spiritual and social support community are vital parts of taking care of my own mental health. Having a strong foundation of support and a “safe place to land” within our everyday life is invaluable. Also, I have scheduled naps lol; napping is one of my favorite coping skills, I take a nap at the end of the work week as way of decompressing."
What gives you hope right now?
"I find hope in what I know is inside of me; my Faith, resiliency, and overall ability to persevere. In the same fashion I see this hope from the people I serve in how they “show up” for themselves, even in these times of uncertainty. A few words I make it a mission to share with the clients I provide counseling to, is that I will always be there to meet them where they are, and to “be” in the moment with them each time they show up."
Why is Health Plus unique?
"Although Health Plus is a newer name, the organization itself has a long-standing history of serving as a reliable source of support and stability for our clients. We are known for connecting people to the resources they need in a way that is compassionate, people-focused, and centered on ensuring individuals receive the services and care they deserve. In addition, we have built a reputation for adapting to change and piloting innovative services during challenging and evolving times. In light of the unprecedented circumstances we continue to face, I remain hopeful and confident in this agency’s proven ability to rise to the occasion and continue meeting the needs of the communities we serve."
What is something that you are watching, reading, or listening to right now?
"I am an avid reader, so I inhale books in my free time, my current read is a book called Watercolors."
