Let your baby find their first latch! I love a baby friendly hospital, but I've noticed that sometimes in an effort to establish a breastfeeding relationship right away, nursing staff intervene and manually latch baby to breast the first time. Don't do this! While it seems helpful, it takes away a really important moment between mama and baby. It also can make it harder to do on your own later - you won't always have 4 hands to get the job done, and your little babe will have missed their first learning experience. In a study, 16 out of 17 babies latched successfully on their own when given immediate skin to skin. I know it you may feel nervous and inexperienced when it comes to feeding your baby the first time - but believe in yourself and your baby! There's no rush. Enjoy your first moments together.
