Most of you have heard of "fight or flight," some of you may have even heard of "fight, flight, or freeze." However, recently studies are showing that there are in fact 5 physiological responses to threats. These are known as the 5 F's. Flop/Fawn and Friend have recently been added. Flop/Fawn can best be described by picturing a startled opossum or fainting goat. They start with the freeze mechanism, then move into the flop/fawn reaction. This occurs when your brain believes that the freeze response is not enough to keep you safe. The friend response can be described as "Stockholm Syndrome". It is also often seen utilized by children who have continuous contact with their abuser/s.
