A common symptom of PTSD is flashbacks. These can be very different from person to person. Flashbacks are not just what you see in the movies, where the person suffering becomes completely dissociated in a visual scene from the trauma. They also include body flashbacks and emotional flashbacks. The body remembers the trauma and these flashbacks are often associated with panic attacks. If you have ever been flooded with emotions that were incongruent with your surroundings, you may have been experiencing an emotional flashback. These are some techniques to help you get through flashbacks.

Our brains are wired to keep us safe, however the oldest part of our brain can not distinguish time or place. However, it does recall similarities to dangerous events. We call these triggers. Sometimes after a trauma, this part of the brain struggles to turn off and can cause significant impairment. The chemistry of your brain begins to change, and can create uncomfortable, unwanted, negative experiences for the survivor.

Most of you have heard of "fight or flight," some of you may have even heard of "fight, flight, or freeze." However, recently studies are showing that there are in fact 5 physiological responses to threats. These are known as the 5 F's. Flop/Fawn and Friend have recently been added. Flop/Fawn can best be described by picturing a startled opossum or fainting goat. They start with the freeze mechanism, then move into the flop/fawn reaction. This occurs when your brain believes that the freeze response is not enough to keep you safe. The friend response can be described as "Stockholm Syndrome". It is also often seen utilized by children who have continuous contact with their abuser/s.

Most people are familiar with post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), an anxiety disorder that results from a traumatic event, such as a natural disaster or car accident. However, a closely related condition called complex post-traumatic stress disorder (CPTSD) is becoming more widely recognized by doctors in recent years. CPTSD results from repeated trauma over months or years, often in childhood. CPTSD is not a current diagnosis in the DSM-5, however it is recognized by many mental health professionals as different from PTSD. CPTSD symptoms include those of PTSD plus those listed in the picture.

Symptoms of PTSD can vary from person to person. However, there are 5 major critical areas that you must meet for a PTSD diagnosis. They are: exposure to a traumatic event, intrusive symptoms associated to the traumatic event, avoidance of stimuli regarding the traumatic event, negative alterations in cognition and mood, marked alterations in arousal and reactivity.

You might be wondering how writing in a journal can have a significant impact on your mental health.

It turns out that this simple practice can do a lot, especially for those struggling with mental illness or striving towards more positive mental health.

In particular, journaling can be especially helpful for those with Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) or a history of trauma.

Writing works to enhance our mental health through guiding us towards confronting previously inhibited emotions (reducing the stress from inhibition), helping us process difficult events and compose a coherent narrative about our experiences, and possibly even through repeated exposure to the negative emotions associated with traumatic memories.

Try these tips to help you get started with journaling:
1. Try to write every day. Set aside a few minutes every day to write. This will help you to write in your journal regularly.
2. Make it easy. Keep a pen and paper handy at all times. Then when you want to write down your thoughts, you can. You can also keep a journal on your smartphone.
3. Write or draw whatever feels right. Your journal doesn't need to follow any certain structure. It's your own private place to discuss and create whatever you want to express your feelings. Let the words and ideas flow freely. Don't worry about spelling mistakes or what other people might think.
4. Use your journal as you see fit. You don't have to share your journal with anyone. If you do want to share some of your thoughts with trusted friends and loved ones, you could show them parts of your journal.

Utilizing breathing techniques can help take you out of the sympathetic nervous system (fight or flight) and bring you into the parasympathetic nervous system (calm and relaxed). Practicing breathing techniques daily will allow them to become second nature and automatic when you need them the most.

I particularly love this box breathing technique. The Navy seals utilize this technique before and during missions to help them stay focused/alert, to keep their heart rate level, and it helps to prevent tunnel vision.

While you are breathing in a box pattern, you can also imagine drawing the box at the same time for added mindfulness.

The 5-4-3-2-1 grounding technique is one of my favorites to teach clients! It is a great grounding technique to use when you need to bring yourself back to the present moment. This technique can be useful when having panic episodes, emotional/body flashbacks, and/or intrusive thoughts about the past or the future.
