Costume ideas for kids with special needs:
· Autism/sensory friendly costumes:
o Adding construction paper or other materials to a t-shirt can transform any shirt into a creative idea. A yellow shirt can become a pizza, a black shirt can become a night sky, and a purple shirt can become a bunch of grapes!
o Pajama sets with characters on them or of a superhero costume are easy to find and can then become part of their nighttime pajama rotation!
o Regular clothes in Halloween colors: a Halloween themed t-shirt or even just orange sweatpants can do the trick and get your child the treats!
· Adaptive costumes for children with extra equipment:
§ Adding a little cardboard or other crafty materials can take your child’s costume to the next level.
· Wheelchairs:
o Pirate ship on the ocean
o Cinderella’s carriage
o Mario Kart racing carts
o Construction vehicle
o The Batmobile
o The Flintstone’s Car
o School bus
o Ice cream truck
· Walkers:
o A DJ table
o A chef with a stove
o Jet pack
o An airplane
§ There are costumes with hidden flaps, zips, and pockets to accommodate for catheters, feeding tubes, and other medical devices
· Amazon can be a good place to search for these costumes
· Target carries a line of adaptive Halloween costumes

Halloween Costumes: Fun and Safe can coexist!

Safety points:

· Visibility is key! Make sure your child can be seen easily spotted by tired commuters on their way home after a long work week!

o How to keep your child seen:

§ Glow sticks: These are able to be spotted from a distance and come in different shapes/sizes, adding flare to your child’s style and fit their costume!

§ Carry a flashlight: This is an easy way for both you and your trick or treaters to be seen and is easily accessible without an added cost if you have one in your home.

§ Wear light clothing: While your child might be set on wearing the witch costume with the black cape and hat, you can still wear light colored clothing to alert drivers to people being on the road.

§ Light up/glow in the dark candy buckets: these will keep your kids seen without having to carry anything extra!

· Avoid costumes that drag on the ground: This is a tripping hazard, especially when kids are excited and focused on getting to the next candy stop and not where they are stepping.

· Have your kids wear comfortable shoes. Superheroes can’t fight crime, and ghosts can’t be spooky if they have to end the night early because their feet hurt!

o Shoes:

§ Sneakers are best- opt for shoes that support your child’s foot and keep them from tripping.

§ For added warmth: In Vermont we can’t rule out the possibility of snow or near-freezing temperatures. Well-fitting winter boots or thick/wool socks will help keep toes warm all night long.
