Pathways Vermont

Pathways Vermont A non-profit organization working to end homelessness and provide innovative mental health alternatives

Pathways Vermont is a 501(c)3 non-profit organization that supports people to live and thrive in the community at times in their lives when they are most distressed: when they are struggling with thoughts of suicide, are experiencing homelessness, incarceration, institutionalization, mental health struggles or substance use challenges. Pathways Vermont is the first and largest Housing First organization in Vermont, providing permanent housing without requirements or barriers. This evidence based model has been proven to be the most successful approach to ending and preventing homelessness. Through our Housing First programs, we serve people struggling with mental health and substance abuse issues, as well as veterans, families, and people coming out of correctional facilities and other institutions. We use a peer-supported alternative approach to mental health in which individuals with lived experience of mental health challenges guide and aid those experiencing similar challenges. From our Community Center that provides peer support in a friendly setting, to our Soteria House which supports people experiencing mental health crises for the first time, to our 7 days/week, non-judgemental phone Support Line, our programs have an immeasurable impact on the everyday lives of our neighbors in need. Since our inception in 2010, Pathways Vermont has succeeded in:

Housing more than 500 individuals, including 180 children
Helping 75 people find employment
Completing 28,842 supportive phone conversations
Preventing 1,122 instances of use of emergency services

Read our latest blog from Training Manager, Lindsay Mesa. It’s an authentic and powerful piece that explores how we can approach conversations about su***de with compassion and openness.

“One of the most powerful things I’ve learned is that a conversation about su***de is just that: a conversation. An opportunity to connect, to be heard, to be held in relationship.”

My dad died by su***de in May of 2010. He died after an intense battle with thoughts of su***de. His battle started long before I became aware of it – long before I even existed. But to me, it felt like over a span of 8 months, the person that I had known all my life changed before my eyes, becoming unrecognizable. I knew my dad was struggling with thoughts of su***de, but I didn’t talk with him about it. There didn’t exist for me a paradigm with which to do it. I wasn’t the expert. What if I said the wrong thing? What if I made it worse? I was just his kid.

After he died, my family didn’t know how to talk about it. We so desperately wanted to, but how? We were calling his death an “accident.” It felt like the respectful thing to do. To not risk coloring his memory. To not ask anyone else to hold the pain of the truth.

My experience grieving my father does not make me an expert in su***de. But it is a fundamental part of who I am now. The experiences surrounding losing my dad to su***de cracked me open; they shook my foundation such that I wasn’t able to continue the way I’d been. And from that very vulnerable place, the one searching for any available path, I was privileged to find community at Pathways and to be introduced to peer support. And through peer support, I stumbled into a way to talk about su***de.

In peer support, we often use the metaphor of an iceberg. I can still remember the first time I saw a trainer scrawling the craggly shape across a whiteboard. Its rough edges peaking above the surface of the water, all this expansiveness underneath.

✨Meet Christin, Pathways Property Manager South at Pathways Vermont!

Hi – I’m Christin!

I am someone who is passionate, understanding, and easy-going. In my free time, I enjoy reading, spending time with my new baby, my husband, our dog Nugget, and friends.

I started working at Pathways Vermont in October of 2020 as a Rapid Rehousing Housing Coordinator and began my current role as Pathways Property Manager South in July 2021. In my role, I manage and maintain the units that Pathways leases in Southern Vermont. We currently have 34 units that serve 40 program participants. Most of the units are part of our transitional housing programs, and a few are dedicated to permanent supportive housing.

My role involves navigating conversations with property owners about maintenance and repairs, addressing tenancy issues, working with contractors to turn over units, ensuring tenants are abiding by their leases, and conducting inspections. A typical day varies, but I’m mostly doing the things listed above and connecting with owners and community partners to address housing-related concerns.

Pathways’ mission inspires me because of the participants we serve! Many of the people moving into our transitional housing are exiting difficult circumstances such as incarceration or homelessness. It is so inspiring to see them on move-in day, motivated to be part of the community and make positive changes in their lives. Some have been without stable housing for years, and the day can be overwhelming, but just seeing their joy and thankfulness when they get into their apartment is so rewarding.

We were excited to host a visit from the South Korean Mental Health Liberation Research Society (MHLRS) last month!

The MHLRS is a coalition of mental health advocates, including people with lived experience, social workers, psychiatrists, and mental health researchers who are working toward liberatory transformation of the mental health system in South Korea. It was an inspiring opportunity to exchange ideas, share our work, and learn from one another’s experiences in advancing mental health justice.

✨ Meet Emilie, Resident Support Staff at Rosewood Cottage!

Hi – I’m Emilie!

I am someone who loves nature and who has a dedication to supporting positive social change. In my free time, I enjoy cooking, hiking, and nature photography.

I have been a Peer Support Staff member on the overnight shift at Rosewood Cottage for about a month now. My role is to create a welcoming environment where I engage in peer support with the people who come to stay at the peer respite. A shift at Rosewood Cottage can include any number of activities depending on the interests of the individuals staying at the respite. Often, this includes having meaningful conversations, creating artwork, listening to music, enjoying meals, and being present with one another.

I am inspired by the variety of programs at Pathways that provide accessible and equitable services to those who need them most within our communities. I am grateful to be a part of an organization that prioritizes Housing First and mental health services that emphasize holistic support for every individual.
