Thankful Thursdays:
"What makes the Pines a great place to live and a place you want to call home?"

The Pines met our initial criteria including affordable rent, convenient location, well maintained property, responsive management, reliable and maintenance staff. The options for other services, i.e., chef prepared meals, in-house hair salon, SASH if needed, were also attractive features.

There definitely was a period of adjustment moving from our home of 40+ years to a apt. living. A friend helped us "reframe" the sound of highway traffic to the sound of ocean waves. Works much of the time.

Being able to reserve the Adirondack Room, or Dining Room for family gatherings has helped us feel more like home. Our grandchildren seem to enjoy our space. The patio (and grills) provides a welcoming space and we've used it often. Having the outdoor space during COVID has been wonderful.

Now that we've lived here 4 years, we can say that we have a whole new extended family. We've gotten to know many of our neighbors and appreciate the common areas where we can sit and visit, i/e, the dining room by the fireplace, the screened in porches, the patio, the Activity Room, the front entrance and on the benches around the yard and gardens - and the library.

We appreciate the kind and respectful interactions with all the the Pines staff, from the front office to those who clean up after us.
It's become home.

All right residents! We are in the peak of summer where it is easy to get dehydrated and in some cases, get heat stroke. Make sure to drink lots of water, minimal activity, and if you have a window fan, make sure that it is blowing air OUT the window, not in. Blowing inwards simply is pushing the hot outside air in. Keep safe by trying these tips at home:

Choose foods with high water content.
If you have trouble drinking fluids, try including water-rich foods with every meal. These include cucumbers, watermelon, lettuce, strawberries, tomatoes and celery. Or if you have time, try making popsicles

OR

Mild dehydration can usually be treated by having the person take more fluids by mouth. Generally, it's best to have the person drink something with some electrolytes, such as a commercial rehydration solution, a sports drink, juice, smoothies, or even bouillon. But in most cases, even drinking water or tea will help.

Thankful Thursdays: "I feel so lucky to be living at the Pines! Phil and Alyson are incredibly supportive, and we have a terrific maintenance team. All of the staff listen to our concerns and come up with solutions. We have a close-knit community, and enjoy a clean, safe environment with beautifully kept grounds. Staff members are great at planning fun events for us, and have looked after our week-being by providing an exercise room and excellent walking paths. We're fortunate to have very fine people at the Summit Properties headquarters like Charlie Brush, Tom Getz, and John Hunt who embody the ideas of the organization. I've been a Pines resident for 16 years , and I can't imagine a better place to live." DV - resident for 16 years.

Thankful Thursday Submission:

Our hearts were filled with sadness and tears
When we had to leave our home
But a miracle appeared before our eyes
We no longer had to roam.

I said to a very dear friend of ours
"Oh my, what can we do?"
She said, "just hop inside my car
I know just the place for you."

She took us to a lovely place
It's called The Pines by name
Folks sat in rocking chairs in the entryway
With a smile on every face.

A warm feeling suddenly filled our hearts
And then we took a tour
A lovely library, a dining room
And laundry rooms on every floor.

Musical programs, exercise room
Lots of things to do
A garden outside for residents
To grow flowers and some veggies too.

And when your tummy's hungry
You know it's time to eat
Wonderful meals, 4 days a week
With menus that can't be beat.

Finally we toured the apartment
Plenty of room and more
This certainly met our every need
With storage room galore.

This all seemed like a dream come true
Never more were we to roam
When the residents gave us those welcome smiles
We knew The Pines was now our home.

The Pines Wildflower Garden: The wildflower meadow before you contains 27 different native annual and perennial wildflowers that thrive when planted here in the Northeast. This mix brings a dynamic medley of blooms to the landscape throughout the entire summer season, with no gaps in color. Annual wildflowers
like Calendula and Cornflower appear quickly in the first year, while perennial varieties like Wild Lupine and Echinacea provide many years of color starting in the second season.
We hope you, and the bees, birds, and butterflies, enjoy this colorful alternative to the weekly mowing task we have become so married to over the past decades. Photo Credit - Resident, H. Kos

We are thankful for each and everyone of our residents here at the Pines. A wonderful description of our community from Joy J. a 10 year resident. "Most Saturday evenings in Balsam House, a group of us bringing own meals, but sharing conversation, laughter, and usually delicious desserts from some members. Recently after a humorous moment someone said, "isn't this a happy place?" and all agreed. The Pines IS a happy place. People care about each other". Thank you Joy J. for sharing this fond heart warming moment with us.

Thoughtful words from our truly amazing residents. "The Pines are different! Unlike other Senior Housing, we are located away from traffic and concrete. I look out my window at white buildings, tree, and flowers, much like a colonial setting. I feel proud when my daughters come and tell me how happy they are to know I'm in such a nice place with wonderful people." Ruth F, resident since 2016.
