A safety reminder for Independence Day: in 2023, U.S. ERs treated 9,700 fireworks injuries. Around 1,800 of the injuries were eye-related. Most occurred at home and often affected bystanders. To lower injury risk:

The Blue Light Controversy
Exposure affects more than just the eyes.

In his latest column, Paul Karpecki, OD, discusses how Americans' increasing exposure to blue light radiation impacts on our ocular and overall health.

"We know that blue light exposure influences sleep patterns, which can lead to issues ranging from dry eye disease to obesity. A systematic review examined 24 high-quality studies and found that blue light exposure from electronic devices significantly disrupted sleep by increasing sleep latency and decreasing sleep quality. The suppression of melatonin production, a hormone essential for sleep regulation, was consistently lowered. The review highlighted the need for practical measures to mitigate blue light exposure, especially in the evening."

What is legal blindness?

Central vision is worse than 20/200 in the BETTER eye even WITH glasses or contact lenses. This means you would have to be 10x closer or an object would have to be 10x larger in order to see compared to a person with normal vision. This is caused by damage or disease to the eyes or brain such as cataracts, macular degeneration, or stroke.

Another definition of legal blindness is when peripheral vision is severely reduced to 20 degrees to less. That means the person has “tunnel vision.” This can be caused by diseases such as a glaucoma, retinitis pigmentosa, or stroke.

Refractive errors such as nearsightedness, farsightedness, and astigmatism can also cause blurred vision, but are usually correctable to 20/20 with glasses or contact lenses. There is no such thing as being “legally blind without glasses.” 🤓
