International cochlear implant day is celebrated on February 25th to commemorate the first cochlear implant surgery performed on that day in 1957. Cochlear implants bypass damaged parts of the inner ear to directly stimulate the auditory nerve and enable people with severe hearing loss to perceive sound.

I know I say it all the time but we truly have the best patients ❤️. This dear patient showed up this morning to shovel our parking lot. He wasn’t asked and we tried to tell him that it wasn’t necessary but he did it anyway. We are truly blessed. Thank you so much for the kindness!!

Have you been watching the Olympics? I was reading where the bobsleds can be extremely loud and I must be honest, I had never thought about the noise that would be involved in this sport. Bobsleds can reach speeds of up to 90 mph which can create a loud environment. It is reported that the competitors often complain about headaches, etc from the high noise levels. Some have described it as terrifying when you combine the overwhelming noise and speed of the sled.

It's heart health month and tomorrow is Valentine's day so let's talk about heart health and hearing. There is a clear link between cardiovascular health and hearing ability. The tiny blood vessels in your inner ear play a critical role in your hearing. They transport oxygen-rich blood to the inner ear, keeping it healthy. However, when heart health declines, these blood vessels struggle to deliver the necessary blood flow. This restricted blood supply damages the delicate structures responsible for processing sound, like hair cells in the cochlea. Hearing loss may be an early warning sign of cardiovascular problems. Research suggests that reduced hearing ability, especially sudden or unexpected hearing loss, could signal underlying heart issues.

Brrrrr. It's freezing outside! Why do your ears hurt when it's cold??
Ear pain in cold weather is often caused by nerve sensitivity, blood vessel constriction, and eustachian tube dysfunction.
The outer ear contains nerves that are sensitive to temperature changes.
Cold temperatures can cause blood vessels in the ears to constrict, reducing blood flow.
These are just some of the reasons for ear pain due to cold temps. The end result remains the same - cover your ears and keep them protected against the freezing temperatures.
