In this collage, I built an imaginary place that somehow feels like home—like the woods behind my childhood house where everything felt alive and enchanted. Little paths, bright flowers, storybook trees… it’s not a real memory, but it carries the same heartbeat. Mindful of how art lets me remember.

For the fourth week of Advent, I added bells and a small red bird to my Advent Calendar Assemblage. The bird stands in for the partridge: a ground-nesting bird, always exposed and vulnerable. In that way, it mirrors the mystery of Christ, who came to earth not in power or spectacle, but as an infant, choosing fragility over force. The bells speak of joy breaking through the quiet waiting. It reminds me to listen more closely this season. Mindful of the way these two symbols echo the joy and wonder I find at Christmas.

For the third week of Advent, I added a pink candle to my Advent Calendar Assemblage. Traditionally lit on Gaudete Sunday, the pink candle marks a shift from “waiting for joy” to “joy among us.” It reminds me that even in the midst of anticipation, joy is already present. Mindful of how this small flame points me to the gift of Christmas to come.

"The Collector's Wall" has been accepted into the Utterly Profound 2025 International Society of Experimental Artists Juried Exhibition.

"The Collector's Wall" is experimental for me because it started as something practical and became something deeply personal. I wanted to see what would happen if I turned ordinary objects - rusted metal, pulleys, chains, bits of wood - into a kind of wall of memory. It's part tool rack, part shrine, part storytelling device. Each hook or latch once had a job, and now it holds pieces that mean something to me - little relics from daily life. I built it by feel, not by plan, letting intuition lead the way. The more I worked, the more it became about what we hold onto, what we display, and what we keep hidden. It's both organized and chaotic, industrial and intimate - a space that honors the beauty in things that have already lived a full life. Mindful of how my collections are an opportunity to tell a story that ignites memory and reflection.

This collage began as a place I once knew by heart. The small shed tucked into the image was in my backyard as a child, surrounded by acres and acres of forest. Pine trees and birch trees framed everything—tall, quiet, steady. I loved those trees.

I learned to love them with my father. I would go into the woods with him and play while he chopped wood for the fire, the sound of his work mixing with birdsong and wind in the trees. We were both lovers of nature, drawn to the woods and the small moments they offered. I miss him.

I am mindful of the ways making this piece didn’t take that away, but it softened the ache. It allowed me to remember the joy we shared, the calm of those trees, and a time when the world felt wide and full of wonder. For a while, missing him feels a little less hard.

This assemblage has become my personal Advent calendar. For the second week of Advent, I added an angel to it: my symbol for the quiet messages, holy interruptions, and gentle “do not be afraid” moments that angels announce and represent for me during this season of reflection. This is my personal lighting of the second candle. Mindful of this quiet moment amidst the flurry of the season.

I think the addition of the gift tag to Jesus on the cross is an interesting combination, as I consider the first week of Advent. This assemblage is meant to act as an Advent calendar that I will add to during the weeks of Advent. This is week one, and I ponder Jesus as a gift to us during the Christmas season: hence the gift tag. At the same time, I ponder what's "trite" about the season: ugly Christmas sweaters, funny Santa hats, gift wrap, bows, decorations, gift tags, and holiday fun. I also consider that God might be good with all of these "trite" things. Maybe God appreciates joy for humans as they celebrate with each other and find happiness in simple, little, "trite" things. Still, I want to remember the profoundness in this Christmas season and remember there is a deep rich meaning in this holiday. I will still find joy in the "trite," but I choose to look deeper. I am mindful that there is more here to understand and discover.

First things first: are these promotional materials and invites not wonderfully adorable and fun? I think they're just delightful!

Another matter: South Haven Center for the Arts is having its 39th Annual Mistletoe Market! This is the perfect place to have some holiday fun and purchase some wonderful holiday gifts. The artists that share their works for this exhibition will not disappoint. I am always astounded by the breath of talent, the fabulous holiday wares to choose from, and the affordable prices. All of this happens within a beautiful space that's filled with seasonal joy and cheer. Enjoy the wonderful local art and gifts Mistletoe Market has to offer this year. Mindful of the pleasure of giving the gift of art!
