Healing isn't always a clear path. Sometimes it feels like progress, other days it feels like you are back at the starting line, and that is totally normal.

Not every step is going to be a big one, but every step matters. Be happy with your progress, no matter how big or small it may seem. Remember: setbacks are part of the process, and there might be a couple bumps along the way. Even when you fall back, you can still move farward.

Sometimes life gets very overwhelming, and your mind and body are trying to let you know that you are overwhelmed. Here are 5 signs and tips for if you need to take a timeout and pause:

1: Feeling drained even after a good rest. If you still feel overwhelmed even after a good nights sleep, you should sit in silence for about 15 minutes with no screens or electronics. This allows you to reset your body and just breathe.

2: Being irritable or angry over nothing. A sign of being overwhelmed is to snap back and get angry when there is nothing to be angry about. Before you speak, you should stop, take a deep breath, and respond calmly or step away from the situation.

3: Trouble getting a good nights sleep. Getting a good night's sleep is important so you feel refreshed and ready for the day. If you aren't getting the sleep you need, before you go to bed you could try not going on screens or reading a book.

4: Having difficulty focusing or having a mental fog. If you are receiving these, then a good way to clear your head is to go outside and go for a walk. Being outside in nature helps the brain to re cope and clear up before proceeding to the next step of your day.

5: Feeling overwhelmed by small tasks. If you have many small tasks lined up for the day, a good way to get through them all is to take just one task, complete it, and move onto the next task. This allows you to focus on one thing at a time and allows yourself to focus and get a lot done.

Taking care of your mental health means giving yourself breaks. Boundaries aren't a bad thing-they are very healthy for your brain. It allows you peace and focus.

A good boundary to start with is "I won't check my emails after I leave from work."

Even the smallest of boundaries can send a great message: your mental health matters. You deserve time to take a break, step back, and keep moving forward.

Burnout can come to anyone at any moment. One day you might be doing everything like normal, then the next day you feel drained and feel like everything is getting heavy. If this sounds familiar, you are not broken, you are just tired, and may need some rest.

Getting back to normal doesn't take a full reset. Small little actions of slowing down can really make a big impact.

Three easy steps you can take today are:

1: Pausing and taking deep breaths. Taking slow, deep breaths can help your body feel calm and relaxed. Doing this breathing exercise for a minute really does help in calming you down and can help you reset and get to what you need to do.

2: Realizing where you are. If you just take a couple seconds and look around you, you will be able to notice many things. You can feel the ground beneath your feet, you can feel the temperature in the room, you can hear the different noises happening around you. Resetting yourself starts in the present moment.

3: Realize it is OK to not do it all. Letting go of one thing can allow you to focus more on what your body needs. Rest is something you need daily to go on to more tasks.

Feeling burnout doesn't mean you're lost. Talking to the right people can help you feel clear minded, well-rested, and more like yourself again. Therapy is a place to recenter yourselves and get back on track.

Have you wondered what the first session of therapy would look like?
Here at Live Well Counseling, this is what you can expect:

- When you come into Live Well Counseling, you will check in with our great office staff at the front desk to make sure all of the required paperwork is filled out, and answers to insurance or payment information is correct.

- You will take a seat and wait for your therapist to call you back. As you head on back to the office, you and your counselor will introduce yourselves to each other as you get to know one another.

- The counselor will talk to you about confidentiality and the way the meeting will work. Each session is about 55 minutes.

-You will then talk to your counselor about why you have decided to participate in counseling, but you don't have to share everything. Your counselor might then ask some questions about how school or your career is going, or how your home life is, or maybe just how you are doing.

- You and your counselor will have a discussion about what you want to accomplish at these meetings and what your goals are, then the session will come to an end.

Remember, it is totally normal to feel awkward or nervous in your first meeting. Therapy is an open space where you can talk about anything, there are no right or wrong answers, and you are able to go at your own pace. A great take away after your session would be to write down a few thoughts or do breath work after your session to process what happened.

Asking the right questions can determine if your therapist is the right fit for you....so what questions should you ask your therapist?
-What type of license do you have? (LCSW, ACMHC, MFT)
-Do you have experience treating clients with similar concerns as mine?
-What is your area of expertise or specialty?
-Do you provide telehealth/online services?
-Do you have experience supporting people with my similar cultural background, identity, or sexual orientation?
-What is your cancellation or missed appointment policy?
-What does a typical session look like, and do you assign homework or tools to work on between sessions?
You will get more out of therapy if the therapist is a good fit for you. Here at Live Well Counseling we say "Therapy is like dating and sometimes you have to date around to find the right fit." We are happy to help you find the "right therapist" for you so your therapeutic journey can be rewarding and beneficial.
