Mountain Valley Counseling of Utah Misty Newman, CMHC Misty Newman, CMHC owner/founder of Mountain Valley Counseling of Utah. Usually what a person walks in the door with is a symptom of deeper difficulties.

At Mountain Valley Counseling, we have worked with many different diagnosis throughout our careers and training. We like to help my clients not only resolve their presenting problem, but also more deeply rooted patterns and behaviors. Our specialties include, but are not limited to trauma, mood disorders, personality disorders, autism spectrum disorders, couples, behavioral addictions, substance use disorders, relationship difficulties, life transitions, grief/loss, and multicultural counseling. We work with couples, adolescents and adults.

The patterns that frustrate you the most often started as strategies that once kept you safe.

😓What once helped you survive—avoiding conflict, people-pleasing, holding back your voice—can now feel limiting.

❤️‍🩹Healing isn’t about erasing those patterns, but understanding them, seeing the protection they offered, and slowly learning new ways to meet your needs without fear.

🔥 Anger often gets a bad reputation—like it’s something we need to “get rid of” or “control.”
But anger is rarely the whole story.
At its root, anger is a signal.

✨ Sometimes it’s telling you a boundary has been crossed.
✨ Sometimes it’s covering hurt, fear, or grief.
✨ Sometimes it’s the only emotion you were ever allowed to express.

When we only see anger on the surface, we miss the pain or need underneath.
Therapy helps you listen to what your anger is really saying—so you can respond with clarity instead of shame.

💬 What do you think your anger might be pointing to?

Reminder: reaching out for help is not a sign of weakness—it’s a sign of courage.

It takes strength to admit when you can’t do everything alone, to let others in, and to say, ‘I need support.’

True strength is knowing when to lean on others and take care of yourself along the way.

✨ Anxiety is often the surface layer — but beneath it, there’s usually something deeper asking for attention.
Unprocessed grief, unmet needs, lack of boundaries, fear of abandonment… anxiety can be the signal, not the root.

Instead of only managing symptoms, try getting curious: What might your anxiety be pointing to?

🌀 Negative self-talk can be relentless—those quiet little voices that say “you’re not enough,” “you always mess up,” “you’ll never change.”

What if you didn’t have to carry those messages anymore? What if you could shred them and make space for something gentler?

That’s where self-compassion comes in. Instead of letting the inner critic run the show, we practice speaking to ourselves the way we would to someone we love.

✨ “I’m trying my best.”
✨ “It’s okay to be human.”
✨ “I deserve kindness, even from myself.”

Shredding negative self-talk isn’t about pretending everything is perfect—it’s about choosing not to believe every cruel thing your mind says.

🤍 People-pleasing often gets praised as being “nice,” “helpful,” or “easygoing.”

But the truth is—it usually starts as survival.
For many, it began in childhood:

✔️ keeping the peace to avoid conflict
✔️ earning love by meeting everyone else’s needs
✔️ making yourself small so others wouldn’t leave

It worked back then. But as adults, it often leaves us feeling invisible, drained, or resentful.

At Mountain Valley Counseling, we help clients uncover the root of patterns like people-pleasing—so they can start saying “yes” to themselves without guilt and be in relationships free of resentment.

🔄 Patterns often repeat until we bring them into awareness. When we explore why we do what we do, we create space for choice instead of autopilot. Therapy is where those cycles can finally be understood—and transformed. 🌱

Sometimes “being good” is less about morality and more about survival.
We learn early which parts of us are acceptable and which parts are not—and we adapt, shaping ourselves to fit the expectations around us.

But the self you present to the world is not the whole story. Underneath might live anger, desire, ambition, or a boldness that once felt dangerous to show.

Therapy invites us to get curious about those hidden parts. If you stopped striving to be “good,” what truths about yourself might come to light?
