This isn’t about phones being “bad.” It’s about what we use them for.

For a lot of people, scrolling becomes a way to:

🙇🏼‍♀️avoid uncomfortable emotions
🙇🏼‍♀️disconnect without having to explain why
🙇🏼‍♀️create space when we don’t know how to ask for it

If you were never taught how to slow down, name what you’re feeling, or stay present when things get uncomfortable… of course you’d reach for something that helps you escape it.

The shift isn’t “stop going on your phone.”
It’s noticing when you’re using it to check out, and getting curious about what’s underneath that.

On average- people can only name 3 emotions.

🤔Why is this problematic? Well, if we can’t name our emotions, we can’t know what we’re experiencing. Additionally our limited emotional vocabulary can limit our ability to process and make meaning of our experiences.

📋 Check in with yourself- what emotions do you consistently notice showing up for you? Are there some that show up more than others? Any you don’t allow?

🛋️🧠Looking to expand your emotional vocabulary? Therapy can help. We have some clinicians that are accepting new clients- reach out to tess@mvccutah.com or head to our website to book your first session!

🎙️Our founder, Misty Newman, was recently a guest on the Be Well podcast speaking about Borderline Personality Disorder.

🙇🏼‍♀️BPD is a commonly misunderstood diagnosis- with many people who are friends, siblings, or partners of people with BPD who are unsure how to navigate it. Here Misty explains what it can feel like to be in a relationship (Any kind of relationship!) with someone with BPD.

🛋️🧠 Do you struggle with Borderline Personality Disorder- or does someone in your life? You deserve support to navigate this. We have clinicians who specialize in BPD and can help. Head to the link in our bio to book your first session or reach out to tess@mvccutah.com.

🙇 Often when we hear terms that resonate with us- they tend to stick around! This can be helpful to give us words to verbalize our experience, but can sometimes limit our ability to gain true insight into our experience.

Are you just a people pleaser- or did you have inconsistent parents?

Are you just a people pleaser- or were you taught to keep everyone around you happy?

Are you just a people pleaser- or are you used to others having extremely high expectations for you?

👩‍🏫 Sometimes we, as clients, have expectations or hopes for therapy that can’t be met- because it would bypass your autonomy as a client. They may feel “good” in the moment, but in the long run they can cause harm.

Healing doesn’t come from becoming some polished, perfect version of yourself.

It comes from turning toward the parts you’d rather hide—the anxious, messy, reactive, hurting parts—and offering them something different than they’ve known before.

Not fixing.
Not shaming.
Not abandoning.

But understanding.

🙇🏼‍♀️ We all develop unconscious strategies to protect ourselves. These begin from a very early age, and often we don’t even realize they’re there until we hit a certain point in our life and realize our life and relationships don’t look the way we’d like them to.

🛋️This is where therapy can be helpful. It can help you gain insight into these defense mechanisms, what role they play, the need they serve, and help you to create something new.

Tracy Powers, AMFT, is deeply passionate about helping couples reconnect, repair, and build more secure relationships. Using Emotionally Focused Therapy (EFT) and other systemic approaches, she creates a space where partners can slow down, feel understood, and begin to make sense of the patterns that keep them stuck.

Her work is grounded in the belief that no one exists in isolation—our relationships shape us. Tracy helps couples move beyond surface-level conflict to explore the deeper emotions and attachment needs underneath, fostering more meaningful and lasting change.

Known for her warm, collaborative style, she meets couples exactly where they are—offering both compassion and gentle challenge as they work toward greater connection, trust, and intimacy.
