Hello friends,
Will and Evelyn Dvorak have been clients of mine for a long time but more importantly they have been great friends and mentors to me for many years.
I first got to know Will and Evelyn when I was growing up in Brown's Farm, a neighborhood off of South Road in Kingston, RI. They were my neighbors and agreed to hire me and my brothers to mow their lawn when my father helped us to start a small lawn mowing business in the neighborhood. The Dvorak's always kept a wonderful garden and after a few years of mowing their grass they started asking me for more help primarily around the garden. Will enjoyed working beside me and taught me many things, especially after I became interested in agriculture and started studying animal science at the University of Rhode Island. Will was raised on a farm in Iowa and had fond memories of his youth.
Over the years, I witnessed Will and Evelyn age and become increasingly more disabled. Since we had already established a good working relationship and friendship they came to me when their needs extended beyond the garden. Although I continued to care for the garden, I also helped them with whatever else they needed, whether it be cleaning, organizing, food prep, errands, appointments and more. This was my first exposure to companion care although at the time this transition was happening I didn't realize that I was becoming a caregiver.
It's not uncommon for entrepreneurs to stumble into their calling and my path into caregiving was certainly one of those stories. I saw a need and I helped as best I could. I am deeply grateful that Will and Evelyn saw something in me, entrusted me, mentored me and were patient with me for all these years. Without them and our experience together I would have never learned to be a caregiver and Helping Hands Companion Care would have never been founded. They are truly special people and caring for them is a privilege.
