Fun Fact Friday: Why do antigen tests result in so many false negatives? Multiple reasons. COVID-19 antigen self-tests are less likely to detect the SARS-CoV-2 virus than nucleic acid amplification tests, such as polymerase chain reaction (PCR) tests. This is especially true early in an infection or for people who do not have COVID-19 symptoms. Additionally, self-tests have high risk for being done incorrectly i.e. not enough sample from your swab and/or incorrect amount of reagent dropped onto the test. The CDC recently released an FDA Safety Communication on this topic which you can read on their site.

Fun Fact Friday: Back to school! Kiddos of all age's and college students are returning back to school. Even before COVID-19, kids were likely to contract weird cold bugs and germs that make them sick. There are a few things we can all do to keep our learners in school, happy and healthy! Teaching our kids to wash their hands before and after eating, after going to the bathroom and throughout the day, we can minimize the amount of bad germs they are exposed to during the day. Additionally, you can boost your child's immune system by ensuring they are getting good sleep, minimize stress, feed them lots of fruits and vegetables and ensure their vaccines are up to date.

Fun Fact Friday: Two unrelated people died after testing positive for Marburg virus in Ghana. Marburg is a rare but highly infectious viral hemorrhagic fever and is in the same family as Ebola. Marburg has probably been transmitted to people from African fruit bats as a result of prolonged exposure from people working in mines and caves that have Rousettus bat colonies. It is not an airborne disease. Once someone is infected, the virus can spread easily between humans through direct contact with the bodily fluids of infected people such as blood, saliva or urine, as well as on surfaces and materials. The Ghana cases are only the second time Marburg has been detected in West Africa. The first reported case in the region was in Guinea last year. There are no vaccines or antiviral treatments approved to treat the Marburg virus. However, supportive care can improve survival rates such as rehydration with oral or intravenous fluids, maintaining oxygen levels, using drug therapies and treating specific symptoms as they arise.

Fun Fact Friday: We're talking monkeypox/orthopoxvirus vaccines today! For more information on monkeypox and its spread, check out last weeks Friday post as well as our June 6th post. You may be surprised at how fast this vaccine came out, however; its not very surprising. Monkeypox is an orthopoxvirus that is related to smallpox and is associated with sporadic outbreaks over the past decades. Due to the similarities between these viruses, manufacturing these vaccines was less of a jump than the creating of the COVID-19 vaccine. Additionally, the US Government has been storing a number of doses of JYNNEOS and ACAM2000 vaccines in case of use of biowarfare by other countries. JYNNEOS is the only FDA licensed vaccine for monkeypox in the United States and is also used to prevent smallpox disease. It is a 2 shot series and can be administered after contact. This vaccine was stockpiled for use in individuals who are immune compromised and are not able to take the ACAM2000 vaccine. ACAM2000 may also be used against monkeypox under an Expanded Access investigational new drug application. The ACAM2000 vaccination results in a small wound that may shed a weakened version of the virus. Due to this, the wound requires appropriate wound care in order to prevent infection of others. The US stockpile is made up primarily of this vaccine, as the majority of the population is capable of having this vaccine. The main issue the US is having with vaccinating effected populations is that up to 1/3 of infected people are immune compromised and are not eligible to have this vaccine. The CDC is currently working hard to manufacture and ship the JYNNEOS vaccine across the country.
