Did you know❔

Gestalt language development is a lesser known path to acquiring language that is common and valid. *Most* autistic individuals develop language in this way and we need to support their language development differently than with our analytic language processors since they’re processing language in a different way.

Two accounts that I love for more information about gestalt language processing are:

Progress in speech therapy isn’t a straight line—it’s more like a winding path with big leaps, slower periods, plateaus, and even occasional setbacks. This is due to many factors such as fatigue, consistency, home practice, and complexity of motor learning or cognitive skills. A child may have mastered a skill one week and have difficult with it the next, and while this can be frustrating for everyone involved, this doesn’t mean therapy has failed.

Often, early stages of therapy involve consistent foundational work that is key to addressing specific goal areas (e.g., working on overall imitation skills, attention, and engagement before spoken language).

A few tips:
• celebrate what may seem to be ‘small’ wins
• be consistent — with attendance at sessions and practice at home
• don’t compare your child to others—each child is on their own journey and learns at their own pace
• trust the process 🤍 (however, if you have concerns, communicate with your SLP to ensure the treatment approach being used is appropriate and goals are being met—don’t be afraid to advocate for your child and find the best clinician for them).

Being at your child’s level and face-to-face with them during reading, playtime, or conversation helps them clearly see your facial expressions, mouth movements, and actions.

Sitting, kneeling, or lying down beside them shows you're engaged and participatory, potentially making interactions less intimidating. The opportunities for modeling language will also increase when you can clearly see what your child is attending to, looking towards, showing interest in, or engaging with.

While I love that Valentine’s Day showcases love and kindness to our children, let’s remember that we don’t need to limit these actions to only one day. Let’s model kindness and acceptance to ALL of those around us today and every day 🤍

When a child’s spoken language is delayed, we want to provide them with any and all other ways to communicate. Giving a child signs to communicate can be beneficial for so many reasons. One of the biggest benefits I’ve noticed is that using signs can reduce frustration when the child is unable to use spoken words. Introducing signs doesn’t mean we’re giving up on spoken language. It is often a bridge to help get there. Or can be a bridge to other means of communication (e.g., high tech devices).

Imagine coming to a road that is under construction and rather than be provided with an alternate route while the road is being worked on, you just had to stop there wait until they were done. Who knows how long it will take? Imagine your frustration level…🤍

To encourage your young child to use spoken words, signs, or gestures/actions, especially those they are already using, give them two choices! When we do this, we’re reducing some of the pressure to communicate, providing a model for them to imitate, and eliminating one aspect of talking/communicating—coming up with/remembering the word/sign/action they want to communicate.

Also, naming and labeling choices while showing or pointing to the objects increases their exposure to words and build their vocabulary 👍🏼

Examples: Do you want an apple or banana? More or all done? Let’s play house or cars?

Try this with your little ones to encourage their language development!

Here are a few quick tips for encouraging and supporting your child’s language development during ✨play✨

Being a ‘play partner’ means that you’re participating in your child’s play, following their lead, responding to their actions/gestures/vocalizations, talking about what they’re doing and what they’re attending to.

Being a ‘play director’ is what we want to avoid: taking charge of play, redirecting to something new or what you have, asking a lot of questions, or leading.

It may seem a little counterintuitive, but get *quiet* and get *curious*. No one likes to be ordered around and questioned all day long. Play is the perfect opportunity to let your child lead and practice their skills while you provide models in a no-pressure and fun environment 🤍

✨Rebrand coming at ya!
I’ve been much quieter on social media so far this year as I’ve been busy and happy with work and also trying to balance work-family-‘me time’.
But I’m so excited to share my new business name and logo with you! It feels like the right time to make this change and I’m so grateful to everyone who has supported me on this journey as I build my private practice 🤍
