There’s nothing like a new year to help us take stock of the ways we’re inadvertently UNhelpful šŸ˜… Here are some ways to lean in and help your children by changing your own language and behavior. We can only control what we do, say, and think, after all.

Getting distracted is part of life but sometimes it can feel very stressful if you have a deadline to meet. PLUS, if you have ADHD or Anxiety, a distraction can feel like you have totally derailed your day.

Next time you get derailed by a distraction, try these steps to reset and refocus:

✨Call out your mistake WITHOUT shaming yourself. This can sound like ā€œugh, I got distracted againā€ or ā€œoh man, I need to get back to working.ā€ When we introduce shame, it makes it spiral and is the opposite of helpful! Shame sounds like ā€œugh, I’m such an idiot for getting distracted again. Why do I always do this?ā€ There’s no shame in making mistakes - keep that shame/blame in check.

✨ Put the distractions FAR AWAY! If it’s your phone, a book, or something easy to store, do it. If the distractions is a TV or bed in your environment, go somewhere else! Sit at a table, on the floor, or even outside if it helps.

✨ Get up and do something unrelated for a minute or two to reset. This can be getting a drink of water, walking to the bathroom, or a quick stretch break.

✨ Come back and set a timer to help focus. Timers are either your best friend or worst enemy depending on how you feel about urgency and pressure. For many, setting a short timer helps get the momentum moving. For others, timer create anxiety. If a timer doesn’t work for you, you can try other tools like changing your seating or using a list to help you.

✨ Repeat as needed! The more you practice the quicker and more automatic these tools will become.
