The dynamic duo supporting real men wear pink and more importantly, Breast Cancer Awareness Month!
October reminds us of how far we have yet to go in the fight against breast cancer. Other than skin cancer, it is the most common cancer among American women. The best way for early detection and intervention is via mammograms, which can detect before it is big enough to feel or cause symptoms.
We encourage our dental family and friends to raise awareness about the importance of yearly checkups!

The American Society of Breast Surgeons recommend a mammogram every year starting at age 40 for normal risk women, and at age 30 for high risk women. Consult with your doctor to see if you should be screened earlier. Happy Friday! 💝

Another FAQ Friday! “Is charcoal toothpaste safe to use instead of regular toothpaste and does it whiten teeth?”

The main ingredient — activated charcoal — is made up of oxidized substances like wood, coconut shells and bamboo. It is very porous and works well to remove toxins BUT, for teeth:

- it is very abrasive and may actually do more harm than good in abrading the whiter, harder protective outer enamel layer of your teeth

- it may increase sensitivity as such

- most do not contain fluoride, a main ingredient that makes teeth more resistant against cavities

- can actually increase staining around existing fillings, crowns, veneers, and near the gum line

Mystery solved! Some trends are meant to be kept out of the mouth 🙂🪥

Happy Friday! Closing out another great week with a FAQ - Frequently Asked Question.

How often should I be going to the dentist?

The answer is: it depends!
While twice a year is a good rule of thumb, it varies on your oral hygiene, habits and individual medical conditions. Who should be going to the dentist more often?
-Pregnant women
-Smokers
-DIABETICS
-People with gum disease
-People with a weak immune response
-People who are prone to cavities or plaque build-up
Even if you brush twice a day and floss daily, we are trained to check and catch problems that you might not see or feel on your own.
And what can you do to minimize your dental appointments? Good ORAL HYGIENE!

Happy Fourth of July, everyone!
A great reminder as many of us hit the beaches this weekend to protect yourselves, your skin and your lips with SPF. The only thing that should be grilling is a BBQ! 😊 🇺🇸 💥

Let’s talk about X-rays!
Ever wondered why your draped in a lead apron and everyone in the room steps out like they’re fleeing the plague? It’s normal to have some concerns.

Your dental team steps away because of the risk of g r a d u a l exposure that accumulates DAILY throughout their career. Otherwise, dental x-rays today are extremely safe.

Today’s digital x-rays, like these “4 check-up bitewings and 2 anterior PAs” have less than the average daily dose of radiation in everyday life. These images are taken yearly to check for cavities hiding between teeth and any apical/root pathology (red circles⭕️).

❌A cross-country flight exposes each passenger to more radiation than a full mouth series of radiographs (20 dental x-rays).

❌A walk to your car in the sun has more radiation exposure than 1 small x-ray.

This trade off helps dentists to perform proper diagnoses, preventive care and avoid more aggressive therapies later down the road. ☠️

When life gives you lemons, what do you do & how does this affect your oral health?
A different twist on the saying BUT, while lemon water has various benefits for our health, our teeth can take a hit. It’s called — EROSION.
Lemon is very acidic, which can wear away the outer, tougher-than-nails layer of our teeth called enamel. This can lead to:
- sensitivity
- increased susceptibility to cavities
- loss of healthy enamel tooth structure
While you might be tempted to brush right away, you need to give your mouth a chance to neutralize on its own. Several tips to help make lemon water better overall:
1. Limit the amount of lemon you drink or sub lemon oil
2. Use a straw
3. Rinse your mouth with water
4. Wait at least 30 min to brush (and floss 1x daily)

Now you can have your lemonade and drink it too! 🍋

What a year it’s been since her departure, but her spirit, memories of “only Angie” stories, and the impact she left on our family, our patients, and these hallways have gotten us through so much.

Today we lit up the sky a little extra for you, Ang 🤍
