Another FAQ Friday! “Is charcoal toothpaste safe to use instead of regular toothpaste and does it whiten teeth?”
The main ingredient — activated charcoal — is made up of oxidized substances like wood, coconut shells and bamboo. It is very porous and works well to remove toxins BUT, for teeth:
- it is very abrasive and may actually do more harm than good in abrading the whiter, harder protective outer enamel layer of your teeth
- it may increase sensitivity as such
- most do not contain fluoride, a main ingredient that makes teeth more resistant against cavities
- can actually increase staining around existing fillings, crowns, veneers, and near the gum line
Mystery solved! Some trends are meant to be kept out of the mouth 🙂🪥
