Fish Oil May Increase Muscle Strength in Elderly Women

Older women may be able to increase their muscle strength by adding fish oil supplements to their exercise program. Fish oil is rich in omega-3 fatty acids and may enhance the benefits of training. Researchers found that three months of training helped to increase muscle strength among 45 healthy women in their 60s. Those who took fish oil each day had somewhat greater gains, and did better on a test where they had to sit down and rise up from a chair several times in a row as fast as they could. Fish oil (EPA/DHA) is generally considered safe at recommended doses, but at high doses can interfere with clotting. Fish oil can also enhance the effects of blood pressure lowering medications, so be sure to discuss with your doctor or pharmacist. Many common side effects - such as bad breath, heartburn, nausea and loose stools – can be avoided by using a quality product recommended by our professional staff.

March Is National Colorectal Cancer Awareness Month

Colorectal cancer is the second leading cause of cancer-related deaths in the United States, when considering cancers which affect both men and women. The risk of developing colorectal cancer increases with advancing age. More than 90% of cases occur in people aged 50 or older. According to the Center for Disease Control, if everyone aged 50 years old or older were screened regularly, as many as 60% of deaths from colorectal cancer could be avoided. Screening can detect colorectal cancer early when treatment works best, or find precancerous polyps (abnormal growths) in the colon or re**um, which can be removed before they turn into cancer. Some studies show that increased physical activity and maintaining a healthy weight may decrease the risk for colorectal cancer. Researchers are examining the role of certain supplements, such as calcium, vitamin D, and selenium, in preventing colorectal cancer.

Low-Dose Naltrexone Eases Fibromyalgia Pain

A new study, reported at the American Academy of Pain Medicine’s 28th Annual Meeting by researchers from Stanford University, is the second report that shows that a low dose of the drug naltrexone significantly reduces daily pain in patients with fibromyalgia. Women with fibromyalgia (average age, 43 years) took low-dose naltrexone (LDN), 4.5 mg each day for 12 weeks. The medication is not commercially available in a 4.5 mg dose, so it had to be custom compounded. Daily symptom monitoring showed a significant reduction in pain in the naltrexone group, compared with the placebo group, and participants rated naltrexone to be as tolerable as placebo The only adverse effects reported more often for naltrexone were vivid dreams and headache. Next to comparable studies of other fibromyalgia treatments, such pregabalin, duloxetine, and milnacipran, LDN has favorable benefits and few side effects.

Novel Therapies for Eczema and Psoriasis

Treatments for eczema (atopic dermatitis) aim to control inflammation, decrease itching, and manage infections that may occur as a result of repeated skin irritation. Common treatments can cause significant side effects; for example, topical corticosteroids used to decrease inflammation and control itching may cause skin thinning and prolong the healing time of damaged skin. Novel preparations such as compounded topical vitamin B12 offers a simple therapeutic approach for eczema. A study showed that topical application of vitamin B12 cream (0.07% cyanocobalamin) reduced the severity and extent of eczema. Both physicians and study participants rated the vitamin B12 cream as significantly superior to placebo, and the treatment was very well tolerated. Avocado oil has been added to improve the formulation so that vitamin B12 cream can be distributed more easily on the surface of the skin, or we can use a specialized base that is easy to apply and cosmetically appealing. Hot Flashes and Night Sweats

Menopause can be a challenging time for any woman. Approximately three-quarters of all women in perimenopause (the time before actual menopause) experience hot flashes and night sweats, and they may linger for 10 years or longer once a woman has reached menopause. But, there is no need to suffer these annoying and sometimes embarrassing symptoms! At our compounding pharmacy, we work with women and their physicians to balance hormones and also offer other treatments to control problematic menopausal symptoms, such as hot flashes, fatigue, insomnia, vaginal dryness, depression, anxiety, headaches, increased urination, reduced bone mass, hair thinning, and mood swings. No Screens Before Bedtime!

Screen time on computers, phones, and tablets can often disrupt sleep. Salk Institute researchers have pinpointed how certain cells in the eye process ambient light and reset our internal clocks, the daily cycles of physiological processes known as the circadian rhythm. After 10 minutes of illumination and under bright light, a substance produced by the retina suppresses the hormone melatonin, which is responsible for regulating sleep. When these cells are exposed to artificial light late into the night, our internal clocks can get confused, resulting in a host of health issues. The exact timing and duration of flu seasons can vary, but influenza activity usually begins to increase in October, peaks between December and March, and can last as late as May. Irritable Bowel Syndrome
Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS) is a very real problem for the almost 50 million people plagued with uncomfortable, often disabling symptoms like bloating, cramps, diarrhea, constipation, and pain. Yet, many people with IBS have suffered for decades without relief, and have even been told “it’s all in your head” by those who couldn’t find the cause of the illness. Some people are told to simply add more fiber to their diet, or are prescribed sedatives, anti-spasm drugs, or antidepressants. To effectively treat IBS, the underlying causes must be addressed to restore normal digestive function and health. Causes may include food allergies, a lack of digestive enzymes, parasites or overgrowth of bacteria in the gut, yeast overgrowth, zinc or magnesium deficiency, and heavy metal toxicity.
