Sometimes the best learning happens when the environment is stress free, inviting, and open to explore. I left the stall open all day for Odoco to explore, lay down in, and simply enjoy at his own pace. I think he liked it!!

One of the first questions often asked in initial therapy sessions is about support networks. Life is challenging and we can’t be expected to know all things…despite our best efforts. We are so incredibly lucky here at the farm to be supported by Daniel Wendell of Soulstice Ranch Equine Sanctuary trimming our equine hooves. We’ve said it before, but his patience, his knowledge and expertise, and his overall presence create a space for our horses, who we learn more and more about their challenges each day, to feel safe.

Joanna from Harbor and Hill Veterinary Services provides sound and solid plans to treat our equines both inside and out. Her kindness and gentleness with our herd goes beyond expectations as she meets each one of our equines where they’re at that day.

And we recently started a (hopefully) long relationship with Abigail of WISH Farm and Shearing. She took her time with each sheep making sure to leave no trace and be present through a potentially stressful process.

Thank you thank you thank you to all!!

Sometimes curiosity gets the best of us. This morning I went down to feed the sheep when I found our dear Maple full of quills.

One of the greatest qualities is curiosity, of which Maple has always had. When she came to the farm she was skiddish, but always with a curious energy. In the recent weeks, through calm and welcoming interactions with people, Maple has come around to love scratches and will gently sniff folks that offer her a similar energy, embracing her cautious but curiousness.

Needless to say she was scared and in pain. I sat on a bucket and allowed her to come to me. When realizing that it was still me and I was there to help, she relaxed. I won’t say she enjoyed the process, but hopefully she learned a good bit about trust. In the end, she melted into my arms after pulling the last quill.

Happy muzzle Monday!! Can you tell which horse this is simply by their nuzzle muzzle?

When a horse lays down, it symbolizes many things. Horses main mode of defense is their speed, their ability to move away from pressure, away from danger. This indicates that laying down implies a certain sense of safety in their surroundings.

When a horse lays down in your presence, it’s nothing short of a gift. The other day I was mucking and Odoco laid down right beside me, only a few feet away. I naturally took a deep breath and began to feel his sense of calm. As I walked closer and laid my hand on him, he didn’t budge, but rather leaned into our collective sense of safety and took deeper breaths, eventually laying all the way down.

On this snowy and windy Thursday a only feels fair! Here is Kimber enjoying some warm sunshine on Tuesday of this week. Not shown is Blackjack just around the corner also laying down and Odoco in his paddock fully laid out for the sun!!

Hope you’re safe and warm wherever you are.

It might have been the last run of the season. Chores and the routine pieces of a farm can feel like work, which is hard, so we make it fun!!

The equine herd forms the backbone of our farm. But every space needs a bit of diversity of energy in order to meet people where they are at. Here is a long overdue welcome to our six Icelandic sheep!! Four come down the road from the folks at Moorit Hill Farm, and two are from Meadowsweet Farm. We feel so fortunate to have these lovely ladies (they’re all ewes…for now) in the lower pasture. Welcome!

Read the names and see if you can guess the theme. It’s tradition to name generations of animals with a theme!

Ever since getting into horses, I’ve had an eye for mustangs. To me, they are Raw, Vulnerable and Real, in a way that domestic horses aren’t. They don’t fit into any specific class, but can do it all. There isn’t a breed standard as they’ve just come to be from breeding in the wild.

Last October, a young bay was rounded up off the range in north eastern California. As part of the Devil’s Garden herd, this young horse found his way to the Double Devil Wild Horse Corrals where he was part of an incredible group of horses looking for a new home. #5488 was our first pick to travel cross country and begin his second life here in Maine.

His story goes on and on, but it is with incredible pleasure that we introduce DG’s The Devil’s in the Details, barn name Odoco. His life changed as he joined the herd to change the lives of others.

As a therapy practice, we want clients to be able to "see themselves" on the farm within our herd. That is to say, we want to have a variety of equines that will give the greatest chance that clients will connect with a particular color, gender, age, and certainly personality. Enter Kimber!! Back in January we got a ring that Kimber was looking for a new home. She comes to us from western Maine where she already learned the art of healing. This sweet soul has given so much of herself and is looking forward to the future hearts she connects with on the journey of healing.
