Review Finds No Evidence That Acetaminophen Use In Pregnancy Increases Risk Of Autism Or Other Neurodevelopmental Disorders:

The New York Times (1/16) reports that a “scientific review of 43 studies on acetaminophen use during pregnancy concluded that there was no evidence that the painkiller increased the risk of autism or other neurodevelopmental disorders.” Prior studies “have examined a possible link between acetaminophen in pregnancy and a risk of neurodevelopmental disorders have produced conflicting data, with some finding no connection and others finding small increases in risk.” However, Dr. Asma Khalil, a professor of obstetrics and maternal fetal medicine at St. George’s Hospital, University of London, and the lead author of the review published in The Lancet Obstetrics, Gynaecology & Women’s Health, said, “We found no clinically important increase in the risk of autism, A.D.H.D. or intellectual disability.” Khalil reiterated that acetaminophen remains “the first-line treatment that we would recommend if the pregnant women have pain or fever in pregnancy.”

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), has revised the recommended U.S. childhood vaccine schedule. This change has been generating many questions and concerns among parents, pediatricians and public health experts

The CDC has changed the recommendations for several vaccines including influenza (flu), rotavirus, meningococcal disease, hepatitis A and B, and respiratory syncytial virus (RSV). The vaccines are no longer broadly recommended for every child but instead are recommended for those at high risk. For all other children, families are encouraged to discuss the vaccines with the child’s provider –called share clinical decision-making.

Officials did emphasize that insurance coverage for all vaccines will remain the same, even if a vaccine isn’t universally recommended.

Why This Matters to You
Public health experts and many pediatricians are raising concerns. This change can lead to more confusion and lower vaccination rates, leaving more kids at risk for preventable diseases and putting more strain on an already overburdened health system.

How the AAP Is Responding
The American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) — the nation’s largest association of pediatricians — has made it clear that its guidance differs significantly from the CDC’s new recommendations. The AAP continues to publish its own pediatric immunization schedule grounded in established scientific evidence and designed to protect children’s health.
Each state can still mandate what vaccines children need for daycare and school.

Allied providers will continue to follow the AAP guidelines. More than ever, your child’s trusted Allied provider will play a key role in guiding vaccine decisions.

One of the health low lights of 2025. We can do better:

US Logs Highest Measles Case Total In Decades
USA Today (12/31) reported the US “recorded 2,012 measles cases as of Dec. 23 [last] year, the highest total in more than 30 years, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.” CDC data indicate that the last time the country saw in excess of “2,000 cases was in 1992, or 33 years ago.” Propelling the totals for the year were “50 outbreaks, defined by the CDC as three or more related cases, reported across the country.” USA Today added that measles “was eliminated in the U.S. by 2000 but has resurfaced with periodic outbreaks, mostly among people who are not vaccinated.” During 2025, a total of 93% of measles cases were among individuals “who were unvaccinated or had an unknown vaccination status, CDC data shows.”

Happy New Year everyone! I wanted to remind you that our physician's assistant Angelica joined us back in the summer and is seeing patients regularly on Wednesdays. She has quickly woven her way into the fabric of our practice and has been readily accepted by all the patients she has seen here. It often arises that our female patients as they approach middle school and beyond may be more comfortable with a female practitioner. If this is the case for you, I would encourage you to arrange an appointment with Angelica. Please call the office if you have any questions.
