Almost 10 years ago, I published a blog with collaborators Onward Transitions for Emerging Adults and Jake Weld, M.Ed., asking a question that still stops parents in their tracks during college acceptance season: "Is your teen actually ready for college — or just ready to get in?"
I recently updated the piece to reflect the post-pandemic landscape, where freshman persistence rates are still climbing back, and a 14% dropout rate reminds us that admission is only half the equation.
The core insight hasn't changed: college flips the support model entirely. In high school, adults provide help to students. In college, students must independently seek out what they need.
Take a moment to read it — or share it with a parent who is worried about their college-age child's success.
Why did I dig it up? I'm attending the Alternatives to College Fair at Brookline Teen Center on 5/7/26, and reflecting on how much has changed — and how much has stayed the same.
