Today was a hard decision.
Closing our doors is never simple, especially when our studio is meant to be a place of rest, joy, and community.

But when the safety of our immigrant community is uncertain, we choose protection first.
We will always put your wellbeing above everything else.
We’ll reopen when it feels truly safe to do so.
Please take care of yourselves and each other. 💛

Joy is an act of resistance.

In honor of Martin Luther King Jr., spoke about joy in community.

In a world that needs reordering, she encouraged us not to forget just how potent joy can be — not passive joy, but active joy. A joy that acknowledges the darkness and still chooses the light.

Seriousness and joy can coexist.
Joy is an added piece of the puzzle in the strategies needed to bring change.

Joy as something we practice together.
Joy as something that keeps us human.

Grateful for the space, the listening, and the shared moment.

Today I sat in the studio before class, looking at this empty mat…
and I felt a deep wave of anger and heartbreak.

We work so hard to create spaces of healing — places where people can breathe, move, and feel human again. But the political climate right now is putting so much fear into immigrant communities that even a yoga studio can feel far away.

People come here seeking rest.
But the fear follows them:

“Will I be stopped on the way home?”
“Who saw me leave my house?”
“Am I safe after this moment of joy?”

Healing is not supposed to feel like this.

I’m frustrated.
I’m heartbroken.
And I’m holding so much sadness for families who simply want safety, dignity, and a place to exhale.

I will keep creating these spaces.
I will keep holding joy and movement.
And I will keep standing with every family who deserves to heal without fear.

Rest should not come with fear.
Joy should not come with danger.
Dignity should not depend on politics.

If you’re carrying this heaviness too, you’re not alone. 🤍

Happy New year #2026
Today’s movement class filled the studio with so much joy.
And you know what makes this place truly special?
Parents show up with their babies.

Child care is one of the biggest barriers for so many families in Maine — but our studio has created a way for mothers to move without worry. While mom takes class downstairs, little ones go upstairs to our kid-yoga space where an adult helps them play, move, and hear stories.

Here, babies are part of the movement.
Here, mothers get one full hour to breathe.
Here, healing is for the whole family. 💛

🕯️Living Funeral Ceremony: A Reflective Pause for the Living

This weekend, join us for a rare and tender journey .. an opportunity to face the truth of mortality as a doorway into deeper gratitude and aliveness.

Through guided reflection, writing, and a meditative death visualization, you’ll be gently led to meet your own memorial and reawaken your regard for life.

Inspired by the “living funerals” of South Korea and expanded by artist + death doula Emily Cross , this ceremony helps participants confront the end, reconcile with the past, and remember what truly matters.

Something special is coming up at Maine Afro Yoga!

As the season shifts, we’re opening space for deep reflection and storytelling — moments to pause, connect, and come home to ourselves.

🕯️ The Living Funeral Ceremony
Friday, October 18 | 4–6 PM
A two-hour guided experience led by Alfine , inviting you to turn bravely toward your own mortality. Through encountering your memorial, engaging in reflective writing, and being guided in a meditative death visualization, you’ll be offered a renewed sense of presence, acceptance, and gratitude for life’s beauty and impermanence.

🌸 Roots & Journeys – A Mothers’ Storytelling Circle with Nuna
Saturday, October 25 | 4–6 PM
Nuna invites mothers — in every expression of the word — to explore who we are through the stories that live in our roots and the journeys that have carried us here. Roots may be ancestral or personal; journeys may be physical, emotional, or spiritual. Together, we will honor stories of survival, resilience, and self-discovery as pathways of identity.

Both are intimate, heart-centered spaces designed to bring healing, honesty, and connection.
