Basketball is a popular school sport in Maine, and the thrill of tournament time is nearly upon us! But did you know that high school basketball has among the highest ankle sprain rates of all sports, with injury rates increasing over the past decade.

Joshua Mayich, MD, an orthopedic surgeon specializing in foot & ankle and trauma care at Northern Light Orthopedics in Presque Isle, shares these tips for preventing injuries for ball players, as well as some guidance for returning to play after an injury.

Know your risk
• Have you had a sprain or injury before? Your risk is increased by 98%!
• Contact increases your risk. Those who live “in the paint” need to be extra aware.
• A family history of ankle injuries increases your risk.

Injury Prevention
• Warmup: A 10-minute warm-up including strength, balance, agility, and aerobic components reduces your risk of injury.
• Ankle bracing: Both lace-up and semi-rigid braces greatly reduce ankle sprain risk.
• Training: Balance and coordination exercises improve control and reduce injury risk.

Rehabilitation and Return to Play
• Complete your therapy! If you’ve gotten an injury and were prescribed treatment – following through with it to the end leads to a much lower risk of re-injury.
• Address modifiable risk factors, such as body mass index, muscle strength, and ankle flexibility.

We wish all of our local high school basketball teams good luck and safe playing for the rest of their season and during the regional and state tournaments.

It was a privilege to connect with residents at Dirigo Pines in Orono yesterday and share about the importance of Stroke Prevention Education. Troy Bailey, provider relations liaison for Northern Light Home Care & Hospice, and Angela Wheelden, RN, manager of Northern Light Stroke Care at Northern Light Eastern Maine Medical Center presented helpful tips and provided blood pressure checks.

According to the CDC, someone dies from a stroke every three minutes and 14 seconds.

Know the FAST warning signs of a stroke:

F – Face drooping
A – Arm weakness
S – Speech difficulty
T – Time to call 911

At Northern Light Health, we provide early diagnosis and treatment for patients experiencing a stroke, and our home health physical and occupational therapists can provide treatment in your home setting as part of your continuity of care team.

Snowboarding is an exciting winter sport, but it comes with increased risks for foot and ankle injuries when compared with skiing. In fact, ankle sprains and fractures are the most frequent injury in snowboarding. Understanding these risks and how to prevent them can help you enjoy the slopes safely.

Joshua Mayich, MD, an orthopedic surgeon specializing in foot & ankle and trauma care at Northern Light Orthopedics in Presque Isle, tells us that this thrilling and healthy sport can be enjoyed safely with the right preparation and precautions. By wearing protective gear, building your strength and balance, choosing appropriate terrain for your skill level, and seeking prompt medical care when injured, you can significantly reduce your risk of foot and ankle injuries and spend more time enjoying the mountain.

Whether you are just shoveling snow from your doorstep or tackling your entire driveway, you could end up with an injury this winter. To help avoid that, we’ve asked Rachel Emery, a physical therapist at Northern Light Rehabilitation, to share some shoveling tips.

• Start with a warm-up. Cold muscles can strain more easily. Consider shoulder rolls, neck rolls, and marching in place.

• Choose the right shovel for you. It should be long enough, so when you push it, your knees are slightly bent, and your trunk is pitched forward just slightly. Your shovel blade should be light and small as to avoid overloading.

• Keep a wide stance, and wear boots that grip. When you hold the shovel, your hands should be at least 12 inches apart.

• To avoid twisting, step in the direction you want to toss the snow and toss it forward/lift the shovel with your legs. Or push the snow forward.

• Stand up periodically to relieve pressure from your low back.

• Take it slow and break up the work into manageable chunks. If you can't say a full sentence, you are working too hard.

• Stop immediately if you have signs of a heart attack, such as dizziness or chest tightness.

Our team at Northern Light Rehabilitation wishes you safe shoveling this winter season!

Today is normally the day when people ditch their New Year’s resolutions, but we wanted to let you know that it’s okay if you aren’t on track, you can still succeed with your resolutions using goal setting.

Look at your goals you’ve set. Is there a way to make some slight adjustments to achieve that first step? “We constantly set goals for ourselves that we feel we should easily be able to achieve, but our skills vary day to day which influences our behavior. Looking at this with goal setting can really make a positive impact,” says Angela Haley, LCPC, CCS, clinical manager of Inpatient Services at Northern Light Acadia Hospital.

For example, let’s say you drink three cups of coffee a day and want to get down to one cup a day. Instead of going to one cup immediately, try drinking only two cups for a day, then go to one cup in a couple of weeks. This small change helps make your goal more achievable.

If you also need a cheat day, take it. Have a day of fun and then get back on track the next day.

It's day four of True North Week at Northern Light Health, and we are excited to announce our hospice social worker Sherri Reardon, LSW, has been selected as the system-wide winner of the Seeing the Individual Award! Northern Light Home Care & Hospice leadership surprised Sherri today with this announcement.

Sherri consistently demonstrates extraordinary commitment to our hospice patients, going far beyond her formal duties to improve their quality of life in deeply personal and meaningful ways. Sherri possesses a unique ability to connect with patients on a human level, understanding their emotional and spiritual needs in addition to their physical ones. Her actions are characterized by thoughtfulness and a genuine desire to bring comfort and dignity to those in her care.

The following is just one story of her profound compassion, which has made a lasting impact on a patient during their end-of-life journey.

When Sherri learned that a hospice patient in a long-term care facility was struggling with not being able to visit a friend's grave, a yearly tradition, Sherri took the initiative to learn the precise location of the grave. On her own time, she went to the cemetery, found the grave, and placed flowers there on the patient's behalf. She then took a picture, framed it, and presented it to the patient. A gesture that brought immense comfort and showed the patient that their cherished traditions were important and worth honoring.

By addressing this emotional need, Sherri significantly improved her patient's emotional well-being and quality of life during a vulnerable and difficult time. This act of empathy transformed a source of sadness into a cherished memory.

Sherri's unwavering dedication ensures that patients feel valued, respected, and comforted, proving that compassion is not merely a task but a way of interacting that makes a profound difference. Her remarkable empathy, exceptional dedication, and commitment to improving the lives of her patients through thoughtful and personalized interventions, exemplifies the highest standard of compassionate care and represents the best of our profession.

🌟Congratulations, Sherri, for being recognized for the exceptional care you provide for our hospice patients! We are grateful you are part of our team!
