Dear Maine Hatha Community,
I’m writing this with a full heart and a little bit of discomfort, because Angela does not know I’m doing this—and if she did, she probably would not want me to.
For 24 years, Angela Weymouth has kept Maine Hatha alive. She has taught the Original Hot Yoga, Bikram Method, with devotion, discipline, humor, grit, and heart. She has created a space where so many of us have healed, grown, sweated, cried, laughed, recovered, and found our way back into our bodies.
Now, with the studio closing at its current location, Angela is facing the loss of her source of income. She never made a lot of money from the studio. It was never about that. In many ways, it was enough to keep going, to put gas in the car, and to keep showing up for all of us. But after pouring everything she had into trying to keep this location alive, she will be left with very little financial ability to take care of herself in the months ahead.
My hope is that we, as a community, can give her something she has given so many of us: support, steadiness, and room to breathe.
I hope Angela can take a few months to rest after more than two decades of teaching and serving this community. And I hope that, while she rests, we can continue working toward the rebirth of Maine Hatha in another form, in another building, and in whatever way this community is meant to continue.
For those who don’t know me, my name is Niall. I came to Maine Hatha last year after moving to Maine for sober living. I was first introduced to Bikram yoga in Vermont, and this practice has taken me to studios across the country, to Mexico, to India, and most importantly, inward.
I still remember my first class five years ago. For the first time in my life, I dropped into my body. That changed me.
When I met Angela, I found a kindred spirit. As someone whose life has been deeply touched by addiction and recovery, I recognized in her a profound gift for teaching, holding space, and helping people heal. That gift cannot be extinguished by the closing of a physical location.
I looked into GoFundMe, but concerns around fees and transparency made me want to choose something more direct. So I’m sharing Angela’s Venmo as a simple way to support her directly:
Venmo: -Weymouth-2
If you have been touched by Angela, by Maine Hatha, by this practice, or by the community she has held together for 24 years, please consider sending what you can. No amount is too small. Every bit helps give her some sustainability, some rest, and a little breathing room after years of giving so much to others.
I wish I could quietly cover this myself and never post a word. I can’t. But I do believe we can rally around her.
Let’s take care of Angela the way she has taken care of us.
With love and gratitude,
Niall
