☀️ Hey everyone! It’s been a minute and I just wanted to share some exciting news! I’ve been on boarded recently as the Executive Director for a fledgling non-profit called Skybird Wildlife Center!

🗺️ We’re located in Durham, Maine in an area that’s going to be a great start for the non-profit.

🐢 We’re looking for medical supplies, donations, and have an active Amazon wishlist. If you’d like to get involved in anyway please let us know and check out the website, it’s posted in the Skybird profile.

Looking forward to being on this journey with them.

Proud to support by attending an insightful fundraising workshop today! As a dedicated board member, I joined fellow advocates from various nonprofits across Maine today. Our goals were to refresh our fundraising strategies and ensure we continue to provide vital support to our communities. The workshop was organized by and was expertly led by Andy Robinson.

Here’s what we covered:
- Identifying the best mix of revenue sources for our organization
- Creating an annual fundraising calendar (so key - the more you plan, the more preparation you have for other events during the year)
- Evaluating current fundraising strategies for feasibility
- Developing and articulating a persuasive case for support to donors
- Identifying new opportunities to improve our fundraising approach
-Plus a whole lot more

The Maine State Breastfeeding Coalition has a mission to make a healthier Maine. Feeling inspired and ready to put these insights into action with the board!

Had some time today to get outside so I decided to go for a hike! Went to Streaked Mountain, which is located out towards the Buckfield, Paris, and Hebron region. A shorter hike but a quick ascent of terrain which was fun.

Location: South Paris/Hebron/Buckfield
Hike style: Small mountain (1750 ft)
Terrain: Rock ledges primarily
Sights: lookouts of nearby hills/peaks on a sunny day. Communication towers at the top.
Length: 1.2 miles total
Takeaways: short but moderately intense hike. Nice place to picnic.

Taking a moment to post an amazing series of sights I had tonight in Maine. The Northern Lights making a true showing in the area I live in. The photo’s pick up on more than it looked like to the plain eyes. Yet there’s something magical to the world just beyond our sight.

PFAS have been on everyone’s minds lately ever since the landmark stories were shared here in Maine. Ever since, there has been mounting research showing that there are long term health concerns with PFAS exposure.

In a recent study just published in October, there was a correlation with PFAS exposure and thyroid cancer. For patients with double the intensity of PFAS in their blood, specifically perfluorooctanesulfonic acid (n-PFOS), there was a 56% increased rate of thyroid cancer.

The repercussions of PFAS exposure is long lasting, and the traceability of exposure into local water sources needs to be explored further.

If you are concerned about potential PFAS exposure, consider speaking with your medical provider about a PFAS serum profile test.

This weekend I had the opportunity to stop in at the Fourth Annual Fermentation Fair at
It was amazing to see so many passionate fermenters out there, from home based operations to small farms and businesses.

There was a culture swap, taste contest, resources for getting started and of course some delicious food.

The market they had setup brought together a lot of different goods and options available. 🥬

I didn’t make it to the workshop series they had planned for today, but I’m looking forward to attending again next year. Thank you to all the people who chatted with me. I appreciated the culture starts, information, shared recipes and everything else!

Just to show how important fermented foods are, I wanted to share this tidbit:

People that eat fermented foods on a regular basis have increased Microbiome diversity and have a modified immune response compared to the general population. This includes inflammatory immune proteins, which reduce inflammation. For example interleukin-6 is reduced, which is a protein linked to diabetes and autoimmune conditions. 🦠

Took a step away from the Maine landscape to travel to ILADS 2023 conference in Boston, MA!

ILADS is the International Lyme and Associated Diseases Society, an organization prevailing in the education, promotion and support of vector-borne illnesses.

I had the privilege to be a part of their practitioner fundamentals training this week. Let me say it was extremely informative AND full of so many awesome people from across the country. MD’s, DO’s, ND’s, NP’s, DC’s, PA’s and an assortment of professionals in attendance.

Lyme disease and other Tick-borne infections are on the rise year after year due to a variety of environmental and ecological factors.

In the state where I live (Maine), approximately 40%+ of all deer tick’s carry Lyme, and more carry one of the other tick-borne infections. In some nearby regions along the coast the number of Lyme positive deer ticks is as much as 90%. I have seen so many friends, families, colleagues and patients impacted by these diseases. It’s so important to be educated on appropriate prevention, treatment and support, especially since some conditions are difficult to treat longterm.

I just want to say thank you to ILADS this year for hosting an amazing conference and look forward to continuing this connection.

Had a nice time stopping in today for a smoothie in Brunswick. Picked up the Luz Do Sol with some protein powder 😋

Mango, pineapple, coconut, honey and almond milk. Great combo.

Pineapple 🍍: high in vitamin C
1 serving = whole days worth of vitamin C

Also a good source of copper (an important mineral for many metabolic enzymes for energy and detoxification)

What’s also great about pineapple is that it contains bromelain, a type of natural digestive enzyme! This compound is often found in many digestive support supplements.

So thanks Bay Bowls for fueling my afternoon and bringing some joy.

Had the opportunity to stop in this morning. I received a tour and got to see a lot of the great things they’ve built in . Also managed to make it to the lunch + learn for sharing updates and answering questions on their comprehensive plan.

A lot going on in Bath. I’m excited to see where things go over the next few years. Not just on Main St. either, but in all the places that people live, work and find enjoyment in their community.

Did you know that a healthy community, both in terms of economics and community resource support can dramatically impact health & wellbeing? Community health is a long term staple of public health, but it has only gained more recognition recently. Well deserved since 80-90% of all healthcare conditions are preventable.
