Did you know that more than 1.5 million people in the U.S. suffer brain injuries each year? The most common cause is a bump or blow to the head. Brain Injury Awareness Month is an important reminder to protect your head during everyday activities with these safety tips:

• Always buckle your seatbelt in the car
• Wear a helmet when biking, skating or rollerblading
• Never drive while under the influence of drugs or alcohol
• Older adults: talk to your primary care provider (P*P) about your fall risk and tips for fall prevention
• Parents and caregivers: make living and play areas safer for children

Contact your P*P as soon as you can if you think you have experienced a brain injury,

Today we remember the people we lost and thank those who helped others: the health workers, first responders and community members who showed resilience, care and strength throughout the pandemic.

Take a moment to reflect on how far we’ve come – and keep doing your part by staying up to date on vaccines, practicing good hygiene like washing your hands regularly and supporting each other in staying healthy.

Today, and through this month, we celebrate the strength, leadership, and compassion of women everywhere.

Women who work in our clinics, hospitals, community programs, and partner organizations—help move us closer to a world where healthy is for everyone.

To all the women caring for patients, supporting families, advancing equity, and improving our health system: thank you. Your dedication makes our community stronger.

At HPSM we believe oral health is just as important as physical or mental health – because they’re all connected. Regular dental visits can help prevent painful problems, such as tooth decay and cavities.

During a dental visit:
• You will get a mouth exam
• Your teeth will be cleaned
• Your dentist will talk to you about your oral health and if you need more care

Visit your dentist every six months for a teeth cleaning or as recommended by your dentist. If you are an HPSM Medi-Cal or CareAdvantage member, your HPSM benefits cover dental services through HPSM dental. When you see the dentist, tell them you are covered by HPSM Dental.

Every day, our staff goes above and beyond for our members — and we couldn’t be prouder. Their compassion, dedication, and drive to serve our community make a real difference in the lives of nearly 20% of San Mateo County residents.

Their effort is tangible proof that our vision of “healthy is for everyone” isn’t just words — it’s something our members feel every day.

Heart health starts on your plate. Eating a balanced diet helps keep your heart strong and can help prevent heart disease, high blood pressure and type 2 diabetes.

Start with these tips:

• Choose healthy proteins, including fish, beans and nuts.
• Add fruits and vegetables to your plate, such as spinach, carrots, berries and apples
• Choose whole grains, including whole wheat bread, brown rice and quinoa
• Avoid foods with added sugar and high in salt, such as soda, cereal, deli meats and bacon
• Drink water or tea to hydrate. Limit sugary drinks like soda or juice.
• Limit dairy or choose low-fat dairy products – dairy foods are needed in smaller amounts than other foods in our diet.
• Cook with healthier plant-based oils – use extra virgin olive oil, peanut oil and avocado oil.

Talk with your primary care provider about a food plan that is best for you.

Over the years our leaders have helped shape American healthcare:

• 1953: Dwight Eisenhower created the Department of Health, Education, and Welfare — the foundation for today’s Department of Health and Human Services
• 1965: Lyndon Johnson championed the creation of Medicare, expanding healthcare for older adults and people with disabilities
• 2010: Barack Obama signed the Affordable Care Act, expanding health coverage to millions of Americans

At HPSM, we follow in these leaders’ footsteps by striving to eliminate health disparities and ensure quality care for our members.
