Residential Fire on E. 25th Street Displaces Seven; One Firefighter Injured
On the afternoon of July 9 at approximately 5:07 p.m., the South Sioux City Fire Department (SSCFD) was dispatched to a reported residential structure fire in the 500 block of East 25th Street. The first unit arrived on
scene within four minutes and encountered a single-story home with visible smoke and flames coming from the rear of the structure and rooftop. Mutual aid was requested immediately from Sioux City Fire Rescue (SCFR) and the Dakota City Fire Department.
Crews launched an aggressive offensive attack. A primary search confirmed that all occupants were safely out of the home, and no one was found inside. Firefighters brought the fire under control within approximately 20
minutes.
During the overhaul phase, a SSCFD firefighter sustained a serious neck injury when a section of the ceiling collapsed. He was transported to the hospital for evaluation and admitted for further testing. No civilian or pet injuries were reported.
The fire caused significant damage to the home, which has been "red tagged" and deemed uninhabitable until repairs can be completed. Seven residents were displaced and are currently staying with family members in the area.
A total of 20 personnel from the three responding departments assisted with the incident. The fire has been ruled accidental. It originated on the back deck where the occupant had been cooking before briefly leaving the property. Upon returning, the occupant found the house already on fire.
