🌟 Excited to share my recent podcast episode with Jena Castro-Casbon’s The Independent Clinician’s Practice Success Stories is now available!🌟

In this episode, we dive into how Kelli Meyer built The Speech Scoop a consultative, parent-coaching-centered practice—one that focuses entirely on empowering families.

🎙 Key takeaways from our conversation:

✅ Parent Coaching First: Instead of traditional therapy sessions, I create custom guides and strategies to help parents feel confident supporting their child’s speech and language development— and you can too!

✅ Leveraging Digital Tools: The Speech Scoop began during COVID with YouTube as a platform to reach millions of families—and it's grown ever since! Use your social media platform to maximize your reach and support families everywhere!

✅ The Roadmap to Succes is a Personal Journey: Starting a private practice doesn’t have to mean brick and mortar and traditional therapy. With motivation and the right mindset, clinicians can build their own practice that is meaningful and unique to their strengths!— this is where Jena’s tools and resources help save you time, money and stress!

✅ Professional Consults: Learn how to step out of the box and take your expertise to a new, exciting level that’s not therapy based! Professional development, educational consulting, product development, influencing and content creation are a few areas that your skills could shine!

If you're an SLP, OT, PT or clinician looking for inspiration to take a different approach in your work—or curious about starting a private practice—I’d love for you to check out the episode.

👀 Imitation Hierarchy for spoken language

🌟 Comment “LINK” to be automatically be sent an UPDATED 2 page copy for free! AND a link to the YouTube Video “Increasing Imitation Skills in Toddlers!”

If you had already downloaded this FREE resource, you should have been sent an updated copy today!

🎙️This chart is designed to give parents a starting point for helping their child build imitation skills towards spoken language.

⬆️ Starting at the BOTTOM and working your way up. Children learn to imitate gross motor skills (large muscle movements) before they imitate smaller muscle movements (gestures).

1. Actions with objects: your child can learn that they can do things you can do!
2. Gestures: symbolic representations of words
3. Facial expressions: big mouth movements, kissy faces and other non-verbal actions
4. Intentional vocalizations: making sounds directed TO someone
5. Sound words: onomatopoeia (bang, crash, boom!) or interjections (uh oh! Oh no! Whoops!)
6. Verbal routines: Fill in the blanks for frequently used phrases like “One, Two, ___” or “Ready, Set, __!”
7. Power Words: Action words that get things done!! “Help! Stuck! Mine! No!” words that are motivating for your child to say and help them to communicate a need or request.
8. Single Words: words that are important to your child (names of parents/caregivers, pets, favorite items, etc)

🎙️Comment “WORDS” to be automatically sent a link to this FREE Milestone vs Average Language Development Chart!

What counts as a word?
* Word approximations (e.g. “doe” for go or “ba” for “ball”)
* Actual words (mama/mom)
* Exclamatory/sound words (e.g. “uh-oh”, “beep”, “whoa”, “gulp”)
* Animal sounds (e.g. “moo”, “meow”, “baa”, “maa”, “woof”, “roar”)
* Sign language (e.g. “more”, “all done”, “help”)⠀

💥If you child says any of these words consistently, independently and with intention, then boom! It’s a word!

❓“MILESTONE” - defined as what “MOST” children are able to do at a certain age (approximately 90% of children at this age say the number of words listed).‍

❗️”AVERAGE” - reflects a mean number of words being used by a certain age group (approximately 50% of children at this age say the number of words listed).

⚠️The large gap between averages and milestones is because SLPs often are referring to the average number of words spoken as a reference and the AAP, CDC and Mayo Clinic use the milestone as their reference.

💛 If you child is CLOSE to the milestone number of spoken words, I recommend being pro-active vs “reactive” and waiting until your child’s next doctor visit. Instead, reach out to your state’s early intervention program for a free or low-cost evaluation and also discuss your concerns in detail with your pediatrician. To wait and see is to lose valuable intervention time during the most critical period of development.

👀 The Language Imitation Hierarchy!

🌟 Comment “TIPS” to be automatically sent a link to my YouTube Video “7 Tips to Help Late Talking Toddlers”

⬆️ This language hierarchy chart (starting from the bottom) can be used AFTER your child has met all of the Pre-Verbal Skills (last post)!

1. Actions with objects: does your child copy things that you do with toys?.

2. Gestures or signs: gestures and signs are the best indicator of a child’s later developing language skills because signs are symbolic representations of words!.

3. Nonverbal actions: imitating facial expressions and big mouth movements

4. Intentional Vocalizations: making sounds directed TO someone.

5. Sound words: AKA onomatopoeias (bang! Boom! Crash!) interjections (gulp, mmmm, yum) exclamatory words (uh oh! Oh no! Weee! Whoa!) animal noises (Moo! Baaaa! Meow!)

6. Verbal Routines: fill in the blanks for “ONE, TWO…. ___!” Or “READY, SET…. ___!”

7. Functional Words: “HELP! Mine! Stuck! No! Stop! More! Eat! Milk! Up!” etc.

8. Single words: a variety of single words that are important to your child: mama, dada, bubba, sissy, nana, grandma, pets names, car, truck, ball, water, blanky, etc!.
