Do you relate to any of these?

If so, you may have a cognitive style called inflated responsibility. This is the belief that if there is a potential for harm, it is your responsibility to prevent it βœ‹πŸΌ

Inflated responsibility distorts kindness and turns it into an obligation to prevent harm at any cost πŸ›‘

Instead of assuming responsibility for preventing all possible harm, try to remind yourself of some more balanced thoughts ‡️

β€œI am only responsible for the things under my control.”
β€œEven despite my best efforts, I may hurt some people or fail to prevent harm.”
β€œPart of being a human interacting with others means that I may cause harm. I’m willing to take that risk.”

OCD causes us to experience disturbing intrusive thoughts. The reason why they are so distressing is because these thoughts are β€œego-dystonic.”

This means they are judged unacceptable by the person experiencing them, and inconsistent with their values or what they truly believe.

That’s why a major part of ERP is learning that the presence of a specific thought doesn't have to mean anything about us - thoughts are just thoughts. By learning to tolerate and detach from intrusions, we are able to re-engage with our values and be present in our lives once again.

Most of us make judgments every day, a lot of the day β˜€οΈπŸŒ™β€‹β€‹β€‹β€‹β€‹β€‹β€‹β€‹

This is not inherently bad - BUT when we heap shame and guilt on ourselves it is a cycle that needs to be stopped πŸ›‘β€‹β€‹β€‹β€‹β€‹β€‹β€‹β€‹

This often happens in OCD and anxiety when we judge our thoughts as β€œbad” or indicate something negative about who we are πŸ˜”β€‹β€‹β€‹β€‹β€‹β€‹β€‹β€‹

Remember this tip for the future:
The more shame or guilt you experience with a particular thought, the more non-judgment you need to practice toward it πŸ’–β€‹β€‹β€‹β€‹β€‹β€‹β€‹β€‹

When we struggle with anxiety, we can often find ourselves putting the needs of others before our own to the point of pain for us. Understanding how to assess and meet your needs moment to moment is the foundation of self-care.

Here’s our hot take on how to prepare to have a summer filled with meaningful self-care πŸ‘‡πŸΌ

~ Reflect on previous experiences: was there a time recently when you wanted to take a break, felt burnt out, or upset that someone asked for β€œtoo much?” what would have helped you at that moment ask or secure what you needed?
~ Brainstorm proactive ways to check in with yourself before you reach level E.
~ Identify signals that you may be approaching a time when your self-care skills are needed.
~ Develop a short list of activities that help you feel grounded, secure, and refreshed.

What would you add to this list?

If triggers seem to be overwhelming and you find yourself avoiding people or places due to fear or worry, it may be time to talk with one of our clinicians.

If you find yourself asking these questions repeatedly, never being quite satisfied with an answer, it may be a sign of relationship OCD (ROCD).

ROCD is an OCD subtype characterized by intrusive thoughts and compulsive behavior around the uncertainty of a relationship.

People with ROCD experience frequent doubting thoughts about one or more relationships in spite of little evidence supporting the need for these doubts.

These thoughts often feel impossible to let go of.

Q&A Time ⏰

You asked: What does it really mean to β€œsit with anxiety”❓

This is a good question and one that we hear often. Sitting with anxiety means allowing fear to be there without pushing it away, and saying β€œmaybe” to intrusive thoughts, all while continuing to move toward ➑️ your values.
