Is it true?
From “Elevating the Experts Voume XV”- Haley Buckner RDH - Xylitol News and Oral Health:
In case it has not crossed your desktop, a recent research article on xylitol by the Cleveland Clinic was published in the European Heart Journal. It was titled "Xylitol is Prothrombotic and Associated with Cardiovascular Risk."1
Portions of the article were then picked up by numerous consumer media outlets with headlines like this one on CNN.com, "Common low-calorie sweetener linked to heart attack and stroke, study finds."
These articles and news stories (especially the headlines) might cause some confusion among both professionals and consumers about the use of xylitol in oral care products. As makers of multiple oral care products containing xylitol, we wanted to give you some background in case you are asked about this.
On June 7th, the day after the release of the article, the Cleveland Clinic published an article in its Heart Health section titled, "Eating foods with xylitol can be a risk to your heart." The subtitle of this article is: "Xylitol in processed foods can increase risk of heart attack and stroke - but there's no danger in xylitol in oral care products." https://health.clevelandclinic.org/dangers-of-xylitol. We think the research poses interesting questions about the benefits and risks of ingesting large quantities of sugar alcohols in foods and beverages, and welcome further research on the subject.
It may turn out that like many things in life, moderation is key. For now, we are reminded that xylitol has been used in toothpaste, rinses, gum and mints for decades around the world to help maintain good oral health. Good oral health is linked to overall health.
Knowing you are at the forefront of oral care education, I would be happy to have a more in-depth discussion on the subject.
