Most adults have a resting heart rate of sixty to one hundred beats per minute. When the heart rate stays below sixty beats per minute, it’s considered slow, or “bradycardia.” (“Tachycardia” is when the heart rate is too fast.) This is an electrical problem in the heart. The heart’s “natural pacemaker,” the sinus node, isn’t sending the electrical jolt that causes the heart to contract and pump at the needed pace.

A slower-than-normal heart rate can be common in older adults, but it's important to know when it may signal something more serious. If your loved one is feeling dizzy, weak, or lightheaded, it may be time to talk with a medical professional.

• Keep walkways inside the home clear to prevent trips and falls
• Wear non-slip footwear, even indoors
• Stay warm with layers and blankets and keep heaters used safely
• Keep medications, water, and snacks within easy reach
• Rise slowly from beds and chairs to avoid dizziness
• Keep phones and medical alert devices nearby and charged

Great turnout today at the Orion Long Island Chapter meeting featuring guest speaker George Darienzo, Detective Lieutenant with over 30 years of service with the Nassau County Police Department, who shared his expertise in a powerful presentation on cybersecurity and scam protection for seniors and their families.

For many older adults, these threats are becoming increasingly sophisticated and targeted. Today’s seminar helped attendees better understand common scam tactics, recognize early warning signs of fraud, and learn practical steps to help safeguard personal financial and digital information.

A sincere thank you to our gracious host, Nancy Waldman, at The Residences at Plainview, for welcoming our group.

When life gets busy, as it often does for family caregivers, sleep is often the first thing that is sacrificed. But that can be a mistake as serious as skipping food or water. Quality sleep fuels brain function, emotional balance, immunity, and so much more.
