The Magic of Music on Memory

Have you ever seen how music can reach someone… even when words can’t?

Beth McNeil Muhs shared a powerful moment that many families recognize instantly:

When you play a familiar song — something from a senior’s generation — it can unlock memory in a way that feels almost miraculous.

Even if someone is nonverbal…

Even if they’ve been withdrawn…

🎶 They may still remember the music.

They may hum.
They may tap their hand.
They may smile.
They may suddenly come alive in the moment.

Beth said watching a film that highlighted this (“Ibel”) was another confirmation that she was moving in the right direction — not taking a strictly medical approach, but instead a lifestyle approach that values the individual:
✅ Their life story
✅ Their past interests
✅ Their relationships
✅ Their unique abilities today

At Artful Home Care, we believe care becomes most meaningful when it comes full circle — when we involve family, caregivers, staff, neighbors, and community to support someone’s quality of life in a way that feels personal.

Beth’s background in the art world also shaped this belief. She saw firsthand how creativity and beauty can heal: She saw artists experience it. She experienced it herself. And even art collectors would tell her, “Ever since I put that piece in my home, I walk through the door and a sense of calm completely comes over me.”

That feeling — that calm, that connection — is something everyone deserves at every age.

Sometimes it starts with music. Sometimes it starts with art. But it always starts with honoring the person.

The Remarkable 80-Year-Old Caregiver

One of Beth McNeil Muhs’ biggest inspirations for building Artful Home Care didn’t come from a business book…

It came from her grandmothers.

Beth shared that while exploring ways to diversify her career and income, she began thinking about what mattered most to her — and two women immediately came to mind.

Both of her grandmothers were in their early 80s at the time.

And one of them truly amazed her.

This grandmother was:
✨ Still working as a caregiver at age 80
✨ Supporting clients who were younger than she was
✨ Staying active and engaged in life

She attended her weekly art class, practiced yoga, and volunteered at her church thrift store. She wasn’t just “getting older” — she was still living.

Beth’s other grandmother was equally bright in spirit and cognitively sharp, but had more medical and mobility challenges. And that contrast revealed something important:

Aging isn’t just about what happens to us…

It’s also about the choices and supports we have along the way.

Seeing both grandmothers side-by-side helped Beth start exploring what it truly means to age well — physically, emotionally, and socially — and that exploration became part of the foundation for Artful Home Care.

Because great care isn’t just about helping someone through the day.

It’s about supporting a life that still holds meaning, purpose, and joy.

If your loved one needs support to stay safe, engaged, and cared for at home, we’re here.

The Therapeutic Power of Rediscovering Old Hobbies

Sometimes the most healing moments don’t come from medicine…
They come from something as simple as picking up an old paintbrush.

Beth McNeil Muhs shared something we see often in senior care:

When someone returns to a hobby they once loved — even after years — it can feel like a different kind of therapy.
🎨 Painting
🧵 Crafts
🧩 Puzzles
📚 Reading
🌿 Gardening
🎶 Music
✍️ Writing
📷 Photography

It’s not about being “good” at it. It’s about the experience.

That moment of creating, remembering, and doing something familiar can bring:
✅ Calm
✅ Joy
✅ Confidence
✅ Emotional comfort
✅ A sense of identity and purpose

And at Artful Home Care, we believe care should go deeper than tasks. Yes, we support daily needs — but we also care about who the person is.

Beth explains it best: we take time to explore someone’s story — their history, their interests, their career, and the experiences that shaped them — so we can create a truly individual approach to care.

Because when you honor what someone loves…

You honor them.If your loved one could benefit from compassionate support and meaningful companionship, we’re here to help.

About Us

Artful Home Care, established by Beth McNeill-Muhs in 2013, bridges the gap between elder care and wellness. We believe that with age comes value. We will create a stimulating and engaging living environment within the comforts of home. We offer personal care services, creative arts programs, as well as organized group activities. Our individualized creative care plans promote successful aging and whole life wellness. Artful Home Care isn’t just a home care agency, it is a way of life.

Art, music and wellness provide a well rounded approach to care. Organizations such as RX Art bring art into medical facilities and hospitals to help transform the lives of patients around the world. Extensive neuroscience research shows us that music can trigger memory. And taking a whole life approach to care creates wellbeing in the mind and the body. Beth began Artful Home Care, under the guidance of our Clinical Director, Eileen Torraca, RN who has over 35 years experience as a geriatric care manager.
