September is Su***de Prevention Awareness Month, a time to raise awareness, break the stigma, and remind our community that help is always available. Su***de is preventable, and each of us can play a role in supporting those who may be struggling.

In this video, our Director, Sarah Cassell, shares why prevention matters and invites you to join us for a free QPR Su***de Prevention Training on Monday, September 30th, 6–8 PM at the Southborough Library.

QPR (Question, Persuade, Refer) teaches the warning signs of su***de and how to connect someone to help — because knowing what to do can save a life.

Highlighting LGBTQ+ Leaders in Civil Rights and Human Services

This Pride Month, SYFS is highlighting individuals who have played key roles in shaping U.S. history through their contributions to civil rights, health equity, and social policy. Each spotlight reflects the lasting impact of their work on communities and systems across the country.

Today, we highlight Marsha P. Johnson (1945–1992), a fearless activist, performer, and advocate whose contributions remain foundational to the modern LGBTQ+ rights movement. Johnson, a Black transgender woman, was a visible, outspoken figure in New York City’s q***r community and a key participant in the Stonewall Uprising of 1969, a pivotal moment in LGBTQ+ history.

In the years that followed, she co-founded the Street Transvestite Action Revolutionaries (STAR) with Sylvia Rivera — one of the first organizations in the country to provide shelter, advocacy, and resources to homeless transgender youth, s*x workers, and LGBTQ+ people of color. Beyond LGBTQ+ rights, Johnson spoke out on issues of racial justice, poverty, and public health.

Her advocacy helped create space for the most vulnerable members of her community and continues to influence social services and grassroots organizing today, reminding us of the enduring power of visibility, mutual aid, and community care.
