Kegels are being overprescribed.
I continue to hear people say "my doctor told me to do x number of kegels in order to reduce my symptoms" even though a pelvic floor exam was never performed. Without a proper assessment by a pelvic health PT/OT, why is this still being told to people?!
Many times, I see people with increased tension of their pelvic floor muscles, so kegels can actually make symptoms worse. Also, people are often told to do kegels and have never even been properly taught how to do them.
But here's something else to think about: pelvic floor muscles are supposed to activate throughout the day without you consciously having to think about it. So why is a voluntary contraction being prescribed so often??? We need to relate things back to true FUNCTION. And working with a pelvic health PT/OT can get you on the track!
So if you're dealing with pelvic floor dysfunction, let's stop blindly doing kegels and get to the true "why" behind the issue.
