As the sun gets stronger, it’s time to make sunscreen a regular part of your skincare routine. But where exactly should it go in your routine?

It all depends on the type of sunscreen you’re using:

• 𝗖𝗵𝗲𝗺𝗶𝗰𝗮𝗹 𝘀𝘂𝗻𝘀𝗰𝗿𝗲𝗲𝗻 should be applied 𝗳𝗶𝗿𝘀𝘁, directly to clean skin. It should be applied about 20 minutes before heading outside so it has time to absorb and activate. Then follow up with your moisturizer and makeup.

Sunscreen can be 𝘄𝗮𝘁𝗲𝗿-𝗿𝗲𝘀𝗶𝘀𝘁𝗮𝗻𝘁 𝗼𝗿 𝘃𝗲𝗿𝘆 𝘄𝗮𝘁𝗲𝗿-𝗿𝗲𝘀𝗶𝘀𝘁𝗮𝗻𝘁, but what does that really mean?

According to the FDA, these labels indicate how long your sunscreen will remain effective while your skin is wet, and it must pass specific testing to earn these claims.

PMC Dermatology is breaking it down for you:

• 𝗪𝗮𝘁𝗲𝗿-𝗥𝗲𝘀𝗶𝘀𝘁𝗮𝗻𝘁: Stays effective for up to 40 minutes in water. After that, it’s time to reapply.
