Beets! Beets are a beautiful and tasty spring vegetable that are full of health benefits.

Beets are high in folate, manganese, potassium, iron, Vitamins A, B, & C, zinc, copper, and iron as well as and other plant compounds, such as lutein, zeaxanthin, and betaine.

Beets also contain nitrates (not the kind found in processed meat). These nitrates convert to nitric oxide that opens blood vessels. This helps lower blood pressure and heart rate.

Studies have shown that athletes who drink beetroot juice before a performance results in better oxygen flow. This means that the heart and lungs do not have to work so hard during exercise and allows these organs to perform vigorous activity for a longer period of time. Drinking beet juice before a workout also prevents fatigue. Something most of us who exercise rigorously can use.

I drink beet juice two or three times a week before my workouts, myself. I recommend it! I can feel the difference in my stamina and performance.

Other benefits of eating beets:

Beets

• reduce inflammation

• improve cognitive function

• contain cancer-fighting properties

• helps build the immune system

• Improves eye health

• Supports liver health

Some cautions of consuming too many beets

Beets are:

• high in oxalates - too many oxalates in the diet can increase the risk of kidney stones

• relatively high in natural sugar. However, eating a small amount of beets, such as 1/2 cup, has a negligible effect on blood sugar

• Can turn your stool and urine a red/pink color. Nothing to worry about, but it can worry you if you do not expect it. For my favorite beet recipe, go here: https://veronicashealthyliving.com/healthy-harvard-beets/

Milk! Does It "Do Your Bones Good?" NO!

A recent study published in the British Medical Journal announced that there were more hip fractures, loss of muscle and bone mass in countries with the highest calcium and milk consumption.

Other studies have shown a similar relationship between drinking calcium-rich milk and bone fractures.

One of the best things I have done for my health and bone loss is join an exercise group. In my case, I joined a few months ago. I feel stronger in my arms, body, legs, hips and spine (where my bone loss occurs). Really, I feel stronger everywhere! I no longer have difficulty walking uphill or upstairs with my hips. I am reversing my bone loss! Tell me what you are doing to increase your bone strength.

"Our bones are actually composed of at least 12 minerals. One of them is calcium, but a proper balance of all these minerals is essential for bone health, strong bones, and the prevention of osteoporosis. Osteoporosis is defined as a loss of minerals from the bones, not a loss of just calcium."

Thoughts?

We need a balance of 12 other minerals with calcium to rebuild string bones. Bone loss can be reversed! ...

Another reason that "Milk Does Not Do Your Body good", is that milk and dairy products are difficult for the body to digest.

Pasteurizing causes the milk proteins to break down into chaotic coils that is difficult for the body to digest. These disorganized coils are difficult for our digestive enzymes to digest and absorb the nutrients.

Pasteurization destroys lactase which is the enzyme that helps us digest the sugar found in milk called lactose.

Pasteurization also reduces the vitamin content in milk and makes the calcium very difficult to absorb, making the vitamins, minerals (especially the calcium for which it is touted for), and protein highly unavailable to the body.

This is partially why some people have difficulty digesting pasteurized milk and can digest raw milk.

Milk and milk products does not do our bones good because it causes higher oxidation levels and increases the acidic levels in our body.

The higher our oxidation and acidic levels, the quicker we age and contract disease.

Signs of oxidation are wrinkles, arthritis, stiff joints, aches and pains, loss of flexibility, eyesight, and bone loss, and more. Think of oxidation as rust, like our cars or metal tools. Oxidative stress is the result of dietary choices, lifestyle habits, stress and environmental exposure. Just as an apple turns brown upon exposure to air, so our bodies begin to show accelerated signs of aging,

One way to reverse oxidation is to clean up our diet, eliminate highly acidic forming foods, and eat lots of antioxidant rich foods.

Many of you are here because you have bone loss or have been diagnosed with osteoporosis. I too was diagnosed with bone loss 3 years ago and have since taken active steps to reverse it. I will be sharing my story over the next few weeks.

I plan to begin a series on bone health that will continue for quite a few weeks. My goal is to be exhaustive, pointing those of you concerned about bone loss in the right direction for taking active steps to prevent and reverse it. Let me know if there is anything specific you want covered as we go along.

I created this group to not only support those with bone loss, but also to present information on how to be healthy for the body, brain and chronic issues. In Functional Medicine we work to eliminate illness by addressing all body systems.

As a Functional Medicine Practitioner, I know that we have bone loss because of some dysfunction in the body. And in Functional Medicine we look at addressing that dysfunction and eliminating the source. There are many causes of bone loss, brain dysfunction and chronic illness which all boils down to...."LET'S TAKE CARE OF THE BODY AND GIVE IT WHAT IT NEEDS TO GET HEALTHY". Bone loss, menopause symptoms and brain dysfunction are just symptoms of something greater going on in the body and is your body's way of crying out for help. I look at the cause of client's dysfunction and we work together to eliminate the source and correct course.

So, the information provided here may not be specifically addressing your concern but is an attempt to help you live a healthy life so you can ease symptoms of ill-health.
