As a Pediatric PT, I’m seeing an increase 📈 in babies and toddlers who struggle to play on their own, and it’s more common than you might think. ⁠
⁠
Parents often ask me if therapy is needed, but the truth is, it usually comes down to having too many toys and not enough focus. When the playroom is cluttered, kids can’t focus on one thing at a time, just like we can't work at a messy desk! 🧸✨⁠

To help them get back to the basics, we need to prioritize a clean, organized play space. Show them how to play by modeling 1:1 play, even for just 5-10 minutes a day. And don’t forget clean-up time! Make it fun by singing a clean-up song and helping them finish the task 🎶. ⁠

This hierarchy/pyramid is a powerful visual that helps explain the essential skills children need to confidently grow and thrive in daily activities and academics.⁠

At the base of the pyramid are foundational skills that support everything else, like sensory processing and motor control. Without a strong foundation, children may struggle with higher-level tasks and be misunderstood as having “behavioral” issues.⁠
⁠
For example, a child who is overly sensitive to auditory input might find it difficult to focus in a noisy classroom or at school events. By addressing these needs with intention, we help them process, attend, and transition more smoothly in everyday life 🧠💡.⁠

Today is National Disability Independence Day (NDID) 🫶🏽

Each year is celebrated on July 26 to commemorate the signing of the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) into law in 1990 - prohibiting discrimination against people with disabilities.

As a pediatric physical therapist, I am inspired every day by the determination and joy in the children I have the privilege of working with.
