August is National Immunization Awareness Month!

With school just around the corner, it’s the perfect time to protect kids and teens from vaccine-preventable diseases.

In Michigan, immunization rates are still below the national average, often due to missed appointments or uncertainty about vaccines. A quick conversation can go a long way in building trust, easing concerns, and keeping everyone on track with recommended vaccines.

Learn more about why immunization is important for you, and for your community on this educational resource by the CDC: https://www.cdc.gov/vaccines/events/niam/parents/educational-resources.html

July is Minority Mental Health Awareness Month

Mental health affects everyone, but communities of color often face unique challenges, including stigma, lack of access to care, and systemic inequities, that can make getting help harder.

This month, we recognize the importance of culturally competent mental health support and amplify the voices and stories of Black, Indigenous, Latino, Asian American, Pacific Islander, and other marginalized communities, and the need to address the systemic barriers that often prevent people from receiving the help they deserve.

Let’s use this time to listen, learn, and advocate for inclusive mental health resources that reflect the diversity of those they serve. Because mental health should be accessible, equitable, and stigma-free, for everyone.

Each July, we honor the legacy of author, advocate, and trailblazer Bebe Moore Campbell by recognizing Bebe Moore Campbell National Minority Mental Health Awareness Month (also referred to as BIPOC Mental Health Month). Today is International Celiac Awareness Day, a day dedicated to shining a spotlight on celiac disease, a serious, often misunderstood autoimmune condition that affects 1 in 100 people worldwide. When someone with celiac disease consumes gluten, their immune system reacts by damaging the lining of the small intestine. Over time, this damage impairs nutrient absorption and can lead to a range of health issues.

Today is an opportunity to educate, advocate, and show support for those living with celiac disease, many of whom navigate daily challenges simply to stay healthy. By raising awareness, we empower people to recognize the symptoms, seek proper testing, and access the support and resources they need. It’s also a chance to address the widespread misconceptions surrounding gluten-free living, reminding the public that for people with celiac disease, avoiding gluten is not a trend, but a medical necessity.

How You Can Support Celiac Awareness Day:

Whether you have celiac disease, know someone who does, or are simply passionate about health equity, there are meaningful ways to participate: · Learn the symptoms

- Share educational resources with friends, family, and coworkers, such as:

https://www.beyondceliac.org/gluten-free-diet/

https://celiac.org/

- Support gluten-free businesses and products that cater safely to those with celiac disease.

Each May, Mental Health Awareness Month reminds us of the vital role mental well-being plays in our overall health. While conversations around mental health have grown in recent years, it's still crucial to highlight how deeply intertwined our mental and physical health truly are.

Mental health doesn’t exist in isolation. Anxiety, depression, and stress can significantly impact the development, management, and outcomes of chronic diseases like diabetes, heart disease, and autoimmune disorders.

Taking care of your mental health, through therapy, social connection, mindfulness, or medication when needed, isn’t just about emotional wellness. It's a key part of managing chronic conditions and improving overall health.

This May, let's encourage open conversations, reduce stigma, and support integrated care that treats the whole person, not just the symptoms. Mental health is health.

Build the Connection Across All Stages of Life: Nutrition for Everyone

Healthy eating is important at every stage of life—from infancy to old age. As we grow, our nutritional needs change, and the food choices we make can influence our health for years to come. National Nutrition Month is a great time to reflect on how food connects us across the lifespan.

For children, teaching healthy eating habits early on can set the foundation for a lifetime of health. For adults, making mindful food choices can help maintain energy levels and manage weight. Older adults may face challenges related to maintaining bone health, muscle mass, and cognitive function, but proper nutrition remains key. This month, think about how you and your family can prioritize nutrition at every stage of life, and how sharing meals together can support everyone’s well-being.

Food is more than just sustenance; it is a bridge between people and cultures. This National Nutrition Month, embrace the rich diversity of food traditions around the world. Each culture has its own approach to eating, whether it’s how food is prepared, the ingredients used, or the rituals surrounding meals. Sharing meals with others offers a unique opportunity to learn about their cultures, traditions, and histories. Try cooking dishes from different cultures, attend a multicultural food event, or even invite friends or family from diverse backgrounds to share their favorite meals. Not only will this open your palate to new flavors, but it will also deepen your understanding of the connections between food, culture, and community.
