I am so excited for July, when I get to start working with a new class of future psychiatrists: Mashal Jamil, Nathan Lwo, Connor McCormick, Brandon Nguyen, Joseph Salib and Emile Tadros. They just matched into the Beaumont Psychiatry Residency at Corewell Health, Beaumont Behavioral Health, and Easterseals MORC. Our community is lucky to have them. Congratulations!

About 4 years ago, I started the first known research project dedicated to studying trauma among those found not guilty by reason of insanity (NGRI). I am excited to report that the first article about this study was finally published. As hypothesized, we found high rates of trauma--particularly adverse childhood experiences. Additionally, PTSD was tragically underdiagnosed in this population. I consider trauma to be to psychiatry what HIV is to infectious diseases. Just as HIV is a risk factor for virtually all infectious diseases (e.g., bacterial, viral, fungal) and requires additional treatments besides typical antibiotics (e.g., HAART), trauma is a risk factor for virtually all mental disorders (e.g., depression, anxiety, addiction, personality, and even psychosis and ADHD) and often requires additional treatments besides typical medications/therapies (e.g., trauma-focused psychotherapy). It is often easy to forget that criminal populations are counterintuitively vulnerable populations and I find that knowing about these high levels of trauma helps me have empathy for people with violent pasts. I am proud to work for organizations like Easterseals Michigan and Beaumont Health that provide care for our community's most vulnerable.
