A Periodontal Practice Offering Advanced Treatments

The goal of our practice is to help you achieve the best dental health possible. Our periodontal staff is dedicated to helping patients preserve their teeth through individualized treatments and personalized care. We provide a wide range of periodontal, dental implant, and cosmetic services, and we will work to develop a treatment plan that meets all of your individual needs. Your comfort and personal satisfaction are always of primary importance. For over 25 years the practice of Joseph R. Nemeth, D.D.S. & Associates has led the way toward excellence in periodontal care. Our office uses advanced technology that ranges from state-of-the-art diagnostic tools to therapeutic approaches that enhance the results of treatment and maximize patient comfort.

●In 1990 we became the first periodontal practice in the United States to use lasers in periodontics. Lasers provide tremendous patient benefits, and we now have four different kinds of lasers for patient care. Dental lasers can quickly perform certain procedures that once required more invasive, conventional surgery.

●In 1998 we became the first practice in Michigan to provide periodontal microsurgery. This expertise has helped us achieve excellent cosmetic results for our patients.

●Our practice uses high resolution microscopes that reveal bacteria associated with periodontal problems. We are proud to be one of only a small number of practices in Michigan to have the latest generation i-Cat Cone-Beam 3-D Dental Imaging Scanner.

●To the best of our knowledge, our office was the first periodontal practice in Michigan to use PRF material to enhance surgical outcomes.

●In 2014, Dr. Nemeth became the first periodontist in Michigan to be certified to perform the Pinhole Surgical Technique. Our entire staff is dedicated to assuring our patients’ comfort and relaxation in a friendly and pleasant environment. We work closely as a team with our referring dentists, but a referral by a dentist is not required for a visit to our office. Many patients come to us by word of mouth from friends and family who had a great experience at our office. If you would like to make an appointment at our office, please contact our periodontal staff to schedule an appointment at 248-357-3100. Did you know gum disease affects far more than just your mouth?

The bacteria that cause gum problems don’t stay put, they can enter your bloodstream and travel throughout your body. Research has linked untreated gum disease to serious conditions like:

-Heart disease and heart attacks

- Alzheimer’s and stroke

- Diabetes complications

- Certain cancers

The scary part? Many people don’t even realize they have gum disease until it’s advanced. That’s why regular checkups and early treatment are so important, not just for your smile, but for your overall health.

Gum pockets aren’t just something we measure, they’re one of the most important indicators of your periodontal health.

During your exam, we use a small probe to measure the depth of the space between your gums and teeth.

- Healthy gums usually have a pocket depth of 1–3 mm.
- Depths beyond that, especially 4 mm or more, can signal gum inflammation, bone loss, and the progression of periodontal disease.

Why does this matter?

Because deeper pockets make it easier for bacteria to hide, multiply, and cause damage beneath the surface—often without pain or visible symptoms.

Early detection through pocket measurements allows us to catch issues before they become serious, irreversible problems.

🗓️ If it's been a while since your last periodontal checkup, now is the time to schedule.

When it comes to protecting your teeth and gums, the type of toothbrush you use can make a difference.

Electric toothbrushes offer consistent pressure, built-in timers, and more effective plaque removal, making them a great choice for many patients, especially those with limited dexterity or gum concerns.

Manual toothbrushes, when used correctly, can still do the job well. But they require careful technique to avoid brushing too hard or missing key areas.

Bottom line? The best brush is the one you’ll use twice a day, with the right technique.

Let’s bust a common myth: Flossing isn’t just for when there’s something stuck between your teeth.

In fact, if you’re only reaching for the floss when popcorn kernels make their move, you’re missing the real reason flossing matters: long-term gum health.

Your toothbrush can only reach about 60% of the tooth’s surface. That means nearly 40% of your tooth is left uncleaned, especially between teeth and just under the gumline.

That’s where plaque builds up. And over time? That plaque turns into tartar, which can lead to:

- Gum inflammation (gingivitis)
- Gum recession and bone loss
- Bad breath
- Advanced periodontal disease

Even if your teeth feel fine, gum disease can progress silently, with no pain until it’s already serious.

Not sure you’re flossing effectively, or wondering if you already have early signs of gum disease? We’re here to help.

When it comes to brushing your teeth, more pressure isn’t always better, it can actually cause more harm than good.

Brushing too aggressively can wear down your enamel and cause your gums to recede over time.

That’s because excessive force irritates the gum tissue and can cause it to pull away from the tooth, exposing the sensitive root surface underneath. Once your gums recede, they don’t grow back naturally.

Here’s what can happen when you brush too hard:

- Gum recession and exposed roots

- Increased sensitivity to hot, cold, and sweet foods

- Tooth abrasion or notching near the gumline

What to Do Instead:

- Use a soft-bristled toothbrush

- Let your toothpaste do the work, not your muscles!

- Brush with gentle, circular motions, not back-and-forth scrubbing

If you’re noticing tooth sensitivity or seeing your gums pull back from your teeth, you might be brushing too hard.

Schedule a consultation to learn what’s really going on.
